After cornering or bumps etc. the fuel will move around, a sensor tells the gauge that the feul tank has more or less then it really does and takes a few seconds to cool down or heat back up. If it's faulty it's probably just some wiring,It cost me $200 to get my speedo, fuel, rev, oil and battery wiring sorted (the bloke was a wanker but and didn't get it right the first time). :P Cheers mate hope this can help

sweet i know it has nothing to do with cornering or bumps, but i do reckon it might have somethig to do with the wiring and heating up and cooling down process it seems as tho the gauge like sorta gives up on it, know what i mean, just drifts back well below empty and stays there for a while any ideas? tonguey

As far as i know the fuel gauge gets its "reading" from a float and sender unit. I dont know of an element that heats up or cools down depending on the level, but i could be wrong. Sounds like your problem could be the fuel sender unit located in the fuel tank. Best bet would be to get a new one rather then a "wreakers" one as u could end up with the same problem. You have to drain the tank and remove the unit (it is attached to the low pressure fuel pump).

it is controlled by a float, the guy who told u about the heating element is an idiot who was just tellin stories. I'd say it is wiring Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

OK the fuel level indicator uses a float as far as i know. The setup in the VL fuel tanks isnt all the best so you will get fluctuation of the gauge sometimes up to 1/4 tank at a time. But if you have say a full tank or even half a tank and its going to below empty and back up again id say its a loose wire somewhere along the line. Jack the back of the car up (or best to put it on a hoist) and take a look at the wiring onto the side of the tank just behind the diff above the fuel pump. Check that all wiring is ok, if it is then your prob is probably in the dash.....
