Okay, I went into the tyre/mag center near prospect today and they had some pretty good tyre/mag packages. So I asked a bit more and they seemed to know what they were talking about.
They said they'd fit and balence them in the price and all would be good
BUT I was explaining to them that my current mags were 14" (they are crappy ones) and he then told me "nope, we can't legally can't fit 17's to that, you can take them home and do it yourself though".
Now can anyone confirm that this rule of 2" bigger than factory is right? and it IS for the whole series of commodores (ie grp A came with 16's so I should be able to go up to 18's technically).

The Group A did come with 16's (well the one my Dad had did)
Yes you can only go up 2 sizes, but if you get yourself an enginering certificate, then it is all good. Other wise you will be defected, and thats never good.
Or get a calais frontend, they came with 15", so 17's would be all good (but thats kinda expensive)
Good luck.

In NSW its 2" bigger than the biggest wheel fitted to that model, so if walkys came with 16's you can go to 18"
I have 17's on an SL and my insurance co dont have a prob, and its fully insured.

man NSW has some strange laws. In QLD you can put what ever wheel you want on there providing that the total diameter of the wheel and tyre combined does not increase by any more than an 2 inches. As for width you can go 2 inches wider than what ever was the maxium size wheel you could get on that model car. So seeing that the Walky (amongst other vls) had 16 x 8 you could go leagally up to 10 inches wide.... shame it won't fit. Pretty much use your common sense, if the wheels fit and don't scrub and you can still drive on one of those inspection ramps the Transport people use and you'll be fine, well in my opinion anyway. Don't quote me though I may be wrong.

...I got 17's fitted to my EH at the Mag Wheel Centre here in Melb no probs, and they came out with 13" wheels originally!! They said I could go to 18's if I wanted - I'd just have to use 40 or 35 profile tyres to keep the rolling diameter similar.

just whack some 15" steelies on and then take it in if they want to be so bloody picky about it...
HOLD64 - you can do that because you car is pre-ADR's... you can get away with just about anything.. emmissions... what emissions.. your car can spew toxic gas and it would still be legal

Not 100% true. In QLD legally enlarging the width/diameter of your wheels is determined by the factory in the form of a tyre plaquard that is attatched to the vehicles. It will tell you how much you are allowed to increase/decrease your wheels legally. Now I havent heard of anyone getting done for 17x8's on a VL that was originally fitted with 14" rims but you never know, DOT isnt out there to make themselves friends, neither are insurance companies. But you can get engineers report if you want to. I was informed about this by my tyre shop when I wanted some Simmons rims, but they did say they would fit 19's if I wanted cause, "the customer comes 1st".
Also correct me if I am wrong but Walky wheels are 16x7 not 16x8.

17-10-02, 12:14 GMT+10#10 um, you guys keep going on about this thing called an engineer report. what the hell is it, where do you get it from, and how much do they cost?
i went to bob janes to get a quote on some 17 and 18" mags but they looked at my plaquard and said i couldn't go past a 7" wide rim. this pretty much cut out the possibility of getting anything bigger than 16's. if an engineering report will get around this problem i'm in for sure.

17-10-02, 17:00 GMT+10#11 An engineers report is a certificate (along with a modification plate - those blue tag things in engine bays on the fire wall) that should be obtained whenever you modify your car to an extent that it no longer complies with ADR rules. For instance fitting a roll cage to your VL. VLs dont come with a cage and you are kinda changing the structure of the vehicle therefore requiring a mod plate.
Look up Department Of Trnasport (DOT) in the phne book and look/ask for an modification engineers number which is relevant to the mods you want to do. He/she will advise you whether you can legally change (add or remove) things from your car and will go over the mods once they have been performed to make sure that it is safe and enginered to a satisfactory degree ie. bolts are tight enough, enough clearance etc. If you do want to mod legally though, make sure you speak to theses guys first as it would suck doing mods only to be told that "You cant do that!"
PM me if you need any more clarification.
Cheers
PS. If anyone in Brissie/QLD wants to fit a full cage to their car and still keep it street legal (yes A Pillar bars included) I can get the engineers name that'll comply em.

..yeah but I can kiss those days good-bye when the new engine goes in, engine emissions must comply with those of the year the engine was built

20-10-02, 21:21 GMT+10#13 i thought that rule was for insurance purposes only?
when i got pulled over, the cop was looking for my tyre placard to see what size it came out with originally, he wasnt going to put me off the road if my tyres were too big, and he didnt say it was illegal to have bigger wheels, only for safety sakes.. but yeah i just thought that rule only applied for insurance reasons.

27-10-02, 23:56 GMT+10#15 Gotta love the Brock Placards with the 16*8" rims and 245 tyres.
The understanding i had for NSW was that you were allowed 1" wider and the diameter of the rim did not matter as long as it didn't dissapear under the guards. The outside circumference of the tyre had to be within a certain percentage of the original tyre though.
