OK, I've got my Stock VL N/A 86 Exec Auto and I'm thinking about my first Mod starting with the Exhaust. Heres what I had in mind, Set of Extractors, High-Flow Cat, 2.5" Exhaust the rest of the way... Now, I've been told by many people that a larger Exhaust is only good for the noise, and I've also been told that it will reduce back pressure which will decrease my Torque, and also that it will increase power through the entire RPM Range. :? I don't want my car to be noisy, meaning sound like a Buzzing Fly or like a V8 would, I just want the power. If I was to add a Resonator in the line, would it defeat the purpose of having the Exhaust by reducing its performance? And what would be the difference between a Straight-Through Muffler and Standard Type one (I'm not sure what they're called) in regards to Performance and Noise? Thanx 8) Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i have extractors stock cat (i think its been hacked out not sure though as it was all fitted by the previous owner) and 2&1/2 inch pipe with 1 high flow muffler. i think it is alot better than the normal stock exhaust as i have driven friends cars with stock exhausts. it is lowder but i like it and havent had any probs with the coppers about it so i dont mind.

I had Genie extractors, 2 1/2" all the way to the back. I still have standard CAT but installing hi-flow soon. I dont have a resonator, i have single hi-flow muffler. Its loud as but coppers havent had any prob with it yet.... Id say get an appropriate muffler and still leave resonator off, you can get some nice mufflers which muffle well to keep noise down but still flow well.....

I see you've got your engine rebuilt... How much was that all up? Or did the previous owner do that too?

I did a bodgy exhaust on my VL berlina 3ltr auto. 2 & 1/4, with a superturbo muffler. Still got the standard manifold and front pipe, and resonator. Sounds all right, but I've noticed it seems to rev a lot more freely.... Hauls out nicely to 80kmh in first..... great for getting a grin from the local cops Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ok fellas. On NA's. the area that give the most perfomance is only a short distance from your head. This means that adding high quality extractors (i know pacemakers are good) will give you the performance side. Make sure you get extractors with pipe over cone joints. The rest of the exhaust is mainly only for noise, although top of the line mufflers and cats from companies like FlowMaster. These parts will be VERY expensive and VERY loud. They'll also require larger bore piping (mandrel bent) and will not add as much performance as the extractors will. Big exhaust systems are only necessary for turbo cars, and NA cars in a high state of tune. For a simple upgrade, stick to the extractors, if want something quiet.

Ahh yes, never thought, stick with standard exhaust system but throw on some nice highflow extractors Might wanna get another cat though cuz the original one will most likely be buggered. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

If you dont want to spend the cash for a system, a good idea is extractors to your original exhaust. Then follow the pipe back and you will find a joining link at the rear axle, there is a muffler behind this. I simply took this part of the pipe (and muffler) off and ran a straight through 2 inch pipe to an oval chrome tip from the diff. (You need to know how to weld or someone else that does to do this.) Now you have a cat and one muffler off extractors. Mine sounds ****-loads better than a stocky, although not quite the same as a 2.5 system. A lot cheaper though than the 2.5 / 2.25 option.

try the wreckers, i picked up a 2 1/2 inch system with one muffler, basically brand new for $75, and installed it myself, next i just need a set of extractors for about $350 then im finished for te exhaust

Yeah, i've just got 2 1/2 inch + extractors (genie i think)... I have a very quick interchangable no noise factor, called a muffler The loudish one can be a bit droney actually at certain speeds, but it's usually not, put the muffler on and it's really quiet (actually, it's like a chunky stock exhaust sound) with a little more sound in it. and don't forget the chrome tip eh? NightmareZVL? Damm you could park a small car in that thing is that off a VT SS? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I got my 2 1/2 for free with high flow mufflers and cat.. ) have pacemaker headers and no resonator.. high flow k&n and it made a hell of a lot of difference to the top end.. I am putting an RB20 into the vl in the next few weeks so i will have extractors for sale (two weeks use from new) and i will make up a 3" exhaust at some stage.. ) just need a pipe bender and an oxy ;)
