Okays ... so the manual is on the way out as it does. Thing is, I want to get a conversion done but I DONT wanna go auto i.e C4, Trimatic or Raceglide. I really wanna keep a manual transmission in there.
Apart from the Turbo Supra Box .... can someone name me some other super strong(400-450hp) manual transmissions that I could look at and research up on?
A Tremec TKO is one of the toughest boxes on the planet. The Tremec T56R can stand up to 1200hp+ - they put em into insane Dodge Vipers in the US although $9000 for just a box is out of most peoples budgets.
The regular T56 can take a heap of horsepower through it as well, Just look at Rob Vickery's TTV8, its got a T56, enough said. To fit the T56 (6spd) though you will have to break out the hammer and modify your tranny tunnel to get it to fit into a VL, whereas the TKO, being a 5spd, will slot right in. Its tight but it doesnt need any metal massaging.
Then again these boxes arent cheap so it all depends on your budget. Ive been told that a mustang T5 box can take more abuse than a Supra 5spd and costs less.
If you do get a Tremec though you wont ever have to replace your gearbox again, not for 500hp anyway. Street Commodores did a gearbox guide a few issues back (July 2002), you should check it out.
Hope this helps.
Yeah Ive actually been doing some research on the Tremec TKO 2 .... which apprently can be scored from http://www.vpwmailorder.com.au for about $5000.... which is just bordering on budget.
The other tough ones Ive been looking at are the TR3550($3900) and the TKO 1 which is about $4200.
Im hearing that the TR3550 is rated at 410rwkw .... can anyone confirm this? I think the TR3550 might be the way to go actually. Might give Mal Wood at Gabba Gearboxes a call tommorow.
go the RB25DET box, they are very very strong. plus it will bolt straight in and the are only about $900 to $1200.They will handle well over 750 horses.
Hrm ... are you sure the rb25det box will handle over 750hp... wouldn't more people be doin it that way if if that was the case. Not sayin your wrong hey ... just think its a little weird that such a cheap box can handle that much horsepower.
300zx twin turbo with double synco's between 2nd and 3rd gear..
Change the housing with the rb series.. and should fit straight on and are stronger...
Gearbox's last on the clutch combo and how they are driven

WOW!! thats a lot of revs!!!
yep go a rb25det box, the only diff is it's 8-10mm longer but thats no prob and the clutch slave has different mounts so get that with it.
Internally much stronger than the VLt box.
The 300zx tt box is the same internally as the RB25DET but a little cheaper, $600 (maybe diff ratios) and yes u can fit the internals into a VLt box, only one of the bearing mounts in the rear housing (i think its for the reverse idler shaft) needs to be machined out as it's not deep enough, 8-10mm. There's enough room to do it!
Cheers.
If u want a RB25T gearbox make sure u get a R34 version!! heaps more expensive!! but they have almost identical internals to the almighty GTR cog swapper!! which has been used in 10sec cars!!! The R33 gearbox is a nice tough, cheap alternative!!!
