Hey Everyone, Just say you've got a VLT with 240,000 k's on the clock, (manual) Motor is BOG STOCK (apart from a ram pod) Whats the best way to spend $4000 to get the thing thumping along nicly? Reason being, ive been looking round for a VL Manual Turbo for a fair while now.. Nothing too crash hot out there (in NSW) have about $12000 to spend. But have come across an 86 Berlina, paints great, New 17" wheels with Rubber, Complete interior Re-Trimed But is more doughy than an Automatic Ford Festiva! (no offence if you own one!) Starts first kick, no struggle at all, Idle is PERFECT, but just no go! Theirs no boost guage to see what she's running (possibly below standard boost - but has not been set to do that, just on its own) Also the Power Curve is just about Perfect too.. so no highs and lows, no coughing and spluttering at all! So yeah, didn't want to jump into it and have to spend $$$$$$ to get it moving. he would take $8000 for it, so I have about 4k left.. WHAT TO DO??? keep looking for something else? or; spend the $$ to get it running - BUT How Much and WHAT: Im guessing: $1000 Exhaust $1500 Intercooler What else?? Flow the turbo?? Bigger Turbo?? Engine Rebuild?? Head Port & Polish?? Custom Plenium?? ETC??? also what kind $$$ would I be looking at for the Head P&P? OR!!!!!!! Would it be better to just drop a standard RB25 in (dunno how far you would go with $4000 though) Thanks!!

I'd be fitting a 3" mandrel bent exhaust. Thn I'd fit an intercooler. Personal choice on what type, as everyone has their own ideas. Nizpro cooler does the job for me. Then buy a boost guage and bleed valve, so you can monitor & wind up the boost. Make a heatshield to block the pod filter away from the engine heat & make a cold-air intake out of pvc pipes. Take the time & money on a dyno tune. You should get away with all this for under $4000. Don't skimp on the tune, as this will bring everything together. Cheers mate, good luck.

you wont need to change internals unless u wanna run 9s,RB30s are tough as ****! I'd go for a big 3" zorst, intercooler and wind up da bo0st! anyways, that's what i'd do

mate you could get a sweet vlt for $12000. dont waste your $$ on something that runs like crap. You will save money if you buy something with mods already than do it yourself. trust me from experience. also for that amount of money the paint & interior should be half decent anyway. well thats based on what you will get in perth anyway

Yeah what almhsv said! your could get a damn straight and clean calais turbo with a few mods for that sort of money. Just take your time and look hard and all of a sudden you will find yourself with 1 mean slick lookin' calais turbo that will turn heads! Cheers Kingy

hey dude. u might wanna think about chipping the computer too, no one has mentioned that yet. also, you could get bigger injectors. maybe it is time to freshen up the block, if u start running high boosts through it, u might **** something... just a thought in my opinion, i think u should get an already modified modified version too good luck anyway

Look mate, if you're set on getting this one then do a compression test on it. I bet you'll find that the reason it has no go is cos it's an original motor(never rebuilt) and it just needs a new set of rings to get it going again. Once you've put in some rings you could port the head since you already have it off. Hi-flow your turbo, 3" exhaust and raise your boost. also add a couple of extra injectors, a cooler and get it tuned. This will prolly be the limit of your cash by this stage.

A doughy manual VLt??? The only time a might call a manual VLt doughy is if the turbo was siezed! Just a thought cos u said the power curve was very smooth and it's fairly difficult to drop the boost below standard. Another thought is to check ign timing / cam timing as this can make it idle nice if it has other problems. I'd get it throughly checked out b4 buying, if a prob is found drop the price and get it fixed bigger and better Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
