THERMO FANS. In front or behind the radiator?

I've already got two thermos in the car ( a 10 inch and a 12 inch) and they are sitting on the engine side of the radiator. But noticed the other day that they are only recirculating the hot air already in the engine bay when idling. So would it be better to put them on the other side of radiator blowing through the radiator into the engine(btw got no A/C). has anyone got any ideas or thoughts at all? On relatively warm days the water temp will go up to 90 degrees when idling( according to Microtech, bout halfway on normal dash gauge)

Best thing you can do is vent some of the hot under bonnet air outside somehow. No bonnet vents, but maybe some cool air ducting in from under the guards and a vent up the top of the firewall there if you know what im talking about, so it can exit The only thing to note when putting fans in front is to generally reverse polarity so the fan blows air(into radiator), instead of sucking it (through radiator) as it would do if it were behind the radiator. Also with the thick cored radiators like on vl's, you are generally better of with a single 16" than lots of small pissy ones. Cheers Mick

Well the ones that are on the radiator that come out in the AC vl's are mounted on the outside and blow inwards, i guess they are pretty efficient allthough mine has siezed up.

Put them on the engine side of the radiator for best result, the hot air thats in the engine bay doesnt matter cause its not blowing that air through the radiator the fans are sucking fresh air from outside and drawing it through the radiator. If you mount them on the other side of the radiator blowing through they will still work but when you start driving quick they will block some of the natural air flow.

..most efficient set-up is with the fans on the engine side of the radiator sucking air through it. A fan shroud makes a difference too, I have seen ones made up out of a sheet of aluminium bolted to the radiator and sealed around the edges with circles cut in it the diameter of the fans and then the fans bolted to the aluminium sheet. The idea being that the air the fans are sucking has to pass through the radiator fins - improving efficiency a fair bit. I'm not sure how much of a negative impact this would have on natural air flow through the radiator from the car at speed though.

Ta thanks for your replies. I am already half way through making a fan shroud. But silly me decided to use stainless steel so that it could be polished to a mirror finish. Only problem is stainless is a bitch to cut through. Oh well should at least look good when finished also hopes that it helps with cooling.

U can't really just reverse the polarities so it blows the right way, if u want a fan on the front u have to get a fan thats made for the front! The design of the fan blades make them more efficent 1 way than the other, hence if u turn them the wrong way they dont blow or suck much air! If it's possible to turn the blade over on the motor thats fine!

...I have a couple of thermos which I've changed the fan blades around to work on the opposite side of the radiator - I also accidently wired it up the wrong way the first time and it did work but fan blades were going the wrong way, ie in reverse, swapped it as soon as I tested it and realised the wire color coding wasnt recognisable as "+-" ..but yeah unless you can change the fan blades around it wont work in reverse. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

The Davies Craig fans have a clip on the fan and you can change the fan from a puller to a pusher, ie rear or front. Ive seen dodge set ups with the fans connected up in reverse and they do work, just not the way they are mean to. If its a cheap thermo, youll more than likley have to keep it the way it was designed for (front or rear), better still buy a decent one if you want to keep you car, and your cool Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ford EF - AU twin thermos work the best, They are made by Bosch, cut the shroud to suit and mount from trhe engine side, best thermos I have ever used, Davies Craig did'nt cool my motor down and I hate the adjustable thermo switch that uses the probe in the top radiator hose the crap always leaks, every car I have seen with it fitted results in a small leak.

I dont know what you guys did wrong but my 3 setups ive had (HJ Sedan, HJ Ute and VL) worked great with no leaks and only minimal silicone around the probe and rubber gasket thing. How do the fans turn on and off if you dont have or use the adjustable fan switch?

Youd want to keep an eagle eye on the temp guage!! I had mine that way on my Chev until I nearly cooked it, I use the fan controllers now and havent had a prob since. Are all the thermo fans on the EF-AU the same? or are they slightly different? Any pics?

The EF-L thermos use a different shroud less bulky. Better for tight clearances. The AU-BA have a slightly thicker shroud, but basically the fan motors are the same and made by Bosch. I run the thermos off a switch, And I keep a very good eye on temp gauge.

in my opinion the engine fan works the best on the back, on the front i would put twin 10" thermos off a ford, i think it's the ones mentioned above
