This is a bit off topic, but it may help VLben make a decision I may be opening a can of worms here, but how can a cooler that is off a truck, usually a diesel truck (from what I know diesels use alot more air than a N/A or turbo petrol motor) with a motor somewhere between 8litres and 14litres capacity, have a cooler on it that wont flow enuf to happily run on a 3 litre motor, yeah sure most truck coolers are cut in half so theororeticly there goes half of your flow, but surely there would have to be enuf flow still?? I think that maybe thats what all the "big companys" want people to think (truck coolers dont flow well). I may have it all wrong, and I will except it if I am, there is no need to abuse me. BTW. I have a truck cooler and I would recomend going that way, unless you have deep pockets, or want brand names.

it really deapands on what he wants?? all the super quik cars use good coolers there must be a reason ? if truck coolers were good they wuould use themejust my 2 cents Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I too am for the truck coolers. Mine is off a kenworth truck and has been cut down to size, as for the cooling ability, the word i use is incredible. Before i had the cooler in my temp would always be sitting at approx half way. Once the custom inlet + cooler went in no **** my car will not move off the first bar on the temp guage. Car runs perfect. I would definently reccomend truck coolers. Dont get me wrong - all the big companies etc on and so forth are good at what they do, but 1000 bucks plus for a cooler half the size of mine with no better cooling affects does not really summit that much money.. there are heaps of cars out there running truck cores are are more than happy with 20psi + of boost. I currently am running 15, and have had my cooler temp tested perfecto, she will hold the 20psi + that will get screwed into her soon - I for one would definently not pay all that money for something that does the same job, if not ****loads better. Look around - ask around, im sure theres heaps of others on this site that also use truck cores. Best Bang for ya buck i reckon .. Im not big for paying big companies thousands upon thousands for basic work. Look on the site- look at all the cars / pics - most of them use the truck cores too. Best place to look is on the forums of course - even the trading post - bearing in mind that you will most likely have to get it chopped up and welded. but DEFINENTLY worth the work. Other opinions? Cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I found some info on coolers from another forum, not just in relation to core, but to size as well, since everyone always thinks the bigger the better. It's not just the size of the core that counts but the cross sectional area of the tubes, and the number of tubes your cooler has running accross as well. For example (extreme case), if you had an intercooler that was 3 meters high, 7 meters long and with 14 100mm pipes used as the tubes to do the cooling, I'd imagine that you would have an extreme case of lag and that your car would be undrivable because of the time it would take for your turbo to preasurise or fill that intercooler full of air before you reach the desired level of preassure in the plenum chamber! Not to mention that since your engine will be working on suction at this stage it would be sucking air from the cooler as the turbo is pumping air in! So with this cooler, you may never reach any decent boost. Now with a more realistic example, imagine a cooler 800 X 600 x 100, and with tubes that have a large cross sectional area. With a cooler this size, you would eventually reach desired boost, but because the cross sectional area of your intercooler is greater than the cross sectional area of your pipes running to and from the cooler, the turbo will have to spend a little time filling the cooler with air, until the preasure in the intercooler is equal to the preasure in the plumbing. Only after this happens you will reach full boost in the plenum. So you can have a "bigger" cooler, but if you do, then you should make sure that the tubes of that cooler are also in proportion for the kind of power you are aiming for, so that the cross sectional area of your cooler is equal to the cross sectional area of your pipework. so basically if the tubes are too big, then the surface area per unit volume of air ratio is decreased, hence the ability to cool as efficiently is also decreased. Truck cores have quite large tubes, as the cores are large, they arent designed to be cut in half, so cutting them in half will decrese thier efficiency to cool..

That all makes sense, buta 12 litre motor needs 4 times as much "cooled" air as what a 3litre motor needs (at the same boost pressure), does this mean that you can cut a truck cooler into 3 pieces, and make 3 coolers from that single truck core and they will have the same cooling efficentcy? I agree its not gonna work as well as a purpose built cooler of the same size.

Yeah thats not quite right... a 12l deisel engine will only rev to 2500rpm if that, so the amount of air for 12l @ 2500rpm would be around the same as a 3l @ 7500rpm if u could fill the cylinders with the same pressure!! I know this is way off true but u get what i mean. It comes down to the core runner area for the flow rate but just cut it to fit and it should be all good!!

ohhh yeah, I didn't think of that ops: I'll shudup now before I make myself look even stupider Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Just remember that volumetric efficiency decreases as RPM increases. so a 3L might be doing 7500 rpm, but might only have a volumetric efficiency of 60%

nah i dont think so - on idle at the lights it jumps up to second. nothing wrong with her thats for sure I take more care of my car than i do myself ... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

well think of it this way, the size of the tubes for a truck core would obviosuly be larger to cope with the overal size of the cooler, so if you cut it in half the tubes would be too large for the overall size of the cooler.. in turn, leading to a less efficient cooler because it takes longer to cool air that is in larger tubes.. not only resulting in lag, but most likely pressure drop as well.

Aren't the Nizpro coolers just Kenworth truck coolers anyway? I see a lot of quick cars with those coolers in them. Just my one cents worth of useless comment

Do any of you guys actually know what your talking about, have you ever built a cooler? Trucks also use the same bar and plate, and even tube and fin core the same as most other "car" coolers. Go and see a radiator shop and learn some stuff!

thanks Jet - should put a poll up on what everyone has - it would be more beneficial that way and not really cause arguments - Go the trucks - cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

TRUCK CORES DO THE JOB FINE, I HAD ONE ON A CALAIS YEARS AGO IT WAS MAKING 296 KW AT THE WHEELS HAPPERLY, AT THE END OF THE DAY AN INTERCOOLER IS THERE TO DO THE JOB OF COOLING INTAKE AIR WEATHER ITS SMALL OR BIG HOW THICK IS YOUR WALLET.......
