you know how 6" wont fit in the door of a VL without pods
is it worth it to replace the stock speakers in the front?
what size fits in there?

Stock fronts are 4 inch. You can get some pretty decent 4's, they just won't have as much bass as the 6's.

is there any reason i have 6 and a half inch splits mounted in my doors then without pods?

They must be shallow bloody 6" then...
Do you have MDF Spacers in there or anything??
And anyway Chriz, to answer your question mate, you can get some nice 4" speakers... i threw a set of 4" VDO 2-Ways in my cousins '81 Laser today no trouble and sound awesome

there's some damm nice sounding kenwood dualmag 4" speakers... they cost $199 a set, but they sound nice (oohhh and they're pink :?)
The previous owner installed some 6" pioneers in the front doors without and pods in mine... not sure how Think my front doors are like the TARDIS

Kenwood Dual Mags are awesome speakers,
The VDO's we got were $50 and sound alright.
And as for 6" in the door... Pioneers will fit because they use a shallow as **** cone on them, which is no good for bass.

i have seen fresh_vls splits with no pods .... its crazy....
my mates vl has no pods either but he can only wind his window down till the magnet the toss :P i think a nice pod makes it look a treat..
though fresh_vl's looks pretty tidy... long as u can wind ya windows down hehe.. and yeah the speakers that would fit because they are shallow (magnet and cone size) in my opinion wouldnt be worth it for the quality....
cheers

03-10-02, 03:05 GMT+10#10 yeah no pods
the speakers are jbl splits, 6 inch woofer down the bottom with a tweeter at the top of the doors, they pull very decent bass (as you'd expect for 300) and fit perfectly, window goes fully up and fully down without hitting anything

03-10-02, 19:35 GMT+10#11 If you look in the ellery's manual, the natural holes in the door are towards the rear end at the bottom. Why not just put your speakers there instead of at the front of the door? ...Maybe because the sound wont reach you? im a knobber and just answered my own question..
Although the holes LOOK properly sized for speakers...maybe it was the calais door? *goes to look* 8O

06-10-02, 18:25 GMT+10#12 You will find that in order to fit 6" speakers in the doors you will have to cut metal in the door. I've done this in mine and used some Kenwood 6.5" coaxial speakers in there. Sounds pretty good for the price i paid for the speakers

07-10-02, 20:06 GMT+10#13 I was at Hi-fi supermarket on friday night, as they had this crazy midnight sale thing, and I noticed this set of 6.5" or maybe 6" or 7" splits playing off a headunit that sounded very nice. They were about $180 (mind you this was a reduced price, due to the sale). From looking at the Clarion Australia site, i think they may be:
SRS1624 - 16cm 2-WAY SEPARATE 170W ($189)
SRS1724 - 17cm 2-WAY SEPARATE 170W ($189)
I'm not sure though, but they were definately two separate speakers (like the ones ive posted) and were around the 180/190 dollar mark, and also im pretty sure started with the "S" code.
I thought they sounded pretty decent, but surely a Clarion product this cheap couldnt be decent? COULD IT?
Thanks guys, any advice appreciated.

push out the aircon vents (the bigger ones) on either side (push them back in and they sort of slide out). Then theres two screws up top inside the vents which come out, and the whole black vent assembly should slide out, then everything should be simple.

11-11-02, 20:45 GMT+10#18 I got a sweet set of "EARTHQUAKE" 4" carbon splits, absolutly flog the piss out of any 6" speakers ive heard, but they cost as much as two sets of 6's

11-11-02, 22:43 GMT+10#19 The prev. owner of my car put in a set of pioneer splits in the doors, but put the tweetes in the factory positions, all muffled by dash covers and stuff, I didn't even realize they were there until someone was talking to me about theirs.
Anyway, whipped em out and stuck them in a better position and they sound great. Splits are the way to go.

I did that with 6"s then just ran some really small tweeters off the same wires and slipped them in where the factory speakers were. worked a treat really good direction of high end and still got the doofage up the front. lol gotta love that dirty doofage
