I just got a pair of pioneer 6x9 3-ways and the original parcel shelf is really ****ting me. Can someone pls tell me how u go about making one out of mdf........ I imagine its not as easy as just cutting one out and putting it in there as the original one is very thin and slighty curved where it meets the rear windscreen. thanks. and just one more small question, would it be a good idea to cut holes or vents in the new parcel shelf or not.?

easy as, make a template of your old shelf and just cut out an mdf shelf, they just sit in there so it should be no problems, as for vents? just cut the holes for the 6x9's

hey dans,... its not to hard mate... as fresh vl said u trace the orginal deck., but what will happen is because the new deck is a lot thicker it wont fit flush, u will have to plane the front and rear edges to get it to fit flush... just a little bit of mucking around but it turns out sweet... cheers

Around 15-18mm would be best suited. I used 15mm when i did mine and it seems fine. 8)

Just rip out your back seat (takes 5 mins max) then unbolt whatever's holding your parcel shelf in (mine has the baby seat bolts) and then pull out the shelf. Now measure it up (with probably 2mm extra each way) and shave it back slowly until the sides are perfectly sized. slide it in, and once again slowly shave the back until it sits flush with the window. now pencil mark where the back of the seat meets the shelf and cut it. Should be a perfect fit. Get into your boot, and pencil mark where the baby seat bolt holes are, and then also where the two "speaker" holes are in the cross bars. Flip your (id suggest 18mm) MDF over and cut out the holes. The air vents you dont really need, BUT if you want, just cut them straight from the edge. Now that your holes are big (hopefully enough for the speakers to fit in ), buy/steal some auto carpet (i chose black as my car is gold and im trying to make a black and silver interior) and glue down onto the top of the shelf. Cut out the holes for the speakers from the bottom, and also poke some holes through for the baby seat bolts (if you're going to bolt it down, which i suggest you do with two speakers in the back) and the screw/attach your speakers in, etc. Simple stuff! Good luck Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Just a thought, if you are only having 6x9's in the shelf, don't worry about going 18mm mdf, you could easily get away with 10 or 12 and it would be much easier to work with.

I would only suggest 18, because i heard it helped with "Better bass and sound". Whoever i read that from could be a knobber though 8)

Well i'm making a shelf up and have decided to use 12mm mdf and some silver aluminium sheeting with a plastic polymer center. This stuff is used to make facia's on building resistant to heat and wont fade pretty good stuff but the down side is it costs 400 a square metre! I have nearly finished it when it is done i'll post a few pics i think you will all be impressed.
