whats the output and torque for the old 253's?

the last of the 253's, the VH 253 has 115kW @ 4400rpm and 289Nm @ 3200rpm with twin exhaust option. which is the same kw as a 308 with a single exhaust, I own a VH 253, petrols not too bad, gets off the line quick, will spin through 1st and 2nd (auto box) but at speed its got nothing, it will beat alot of cars (4's and 6's)till abt 60km/hr.

I personally have beaten 2 VH 4.2L v8's...by quite a healthy margin. Don't really understand why anyone would want to pay rego and fuel costs for something which is so incredibly slow !!?? anyway yeah, they suck.... l8r ! Jay Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

dont know how you guys can say the 253 is incredibly gutless, the VL NA 3L Maximum Power: 114 kW Maximum Torque: 247 Nm VH 253 has 115kW @ 4400rpm and 289Nm @ 3200rpm, they both weigh the same ie kerb weights, VL SL NA 6 1253kg VH SL 253 1256kg. so really it would come down to the driveline, dont know what the VL has in terms of diffs but my VH has a 3.08, but the trimatic is **** standard... Id say it would be bloody close if both had a manual. Quote: why anyone would want to pay rego and fuel costs for something which is so incredibly slow !!?? because they are cheap as, parts are easy to find, most of the parts that you modify will then fit straight onto a 308, and they make power easily when given the right mods, eg there was an article a fair while back with info on how to make a 600hp 253 for $7000. next time some of you guys say how crap something is how abt you back up it up with some facts? I dont mind being proven wrong, but dont just say "they suck".

it's not Even a stock VN will whip the pants off an old 308... (seen it done, and the VH had a few mods) ) They sound much better than the VL though BTW, that holden heaven site says the VH puts out 100kw? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

they are **** full stop. why waste time backin it up with facts.. when the two wors "they suck" is all that needs to be said. people claim ohh this had that has this and that hp.. but they then forget that the engines are made at different times with different tollerances and ****.. so one engine might be built with 115kw (in a ****house workshop with crappy machinery) and the rb30 might be built in a dust free, beautiful workshop in japan with the most accurate machinery to date then etc.. of course after 10 years the old 115kw motor is goin to be suffering from its poor fitting parts blah blah and the rb30 will still be goin strong. thats my justification for the reason why the vl would kick the vh. u can then go onto diffs and gearboxes but im my opinion.. the rb30 is just a much better more advanced engine. simple ! pretty basic.. but least i get where i'm comin from.. thats all that matters. hhahah !

Ollie has a good point there... The old 253's were built in a dusty australian factory with poor technology. Whereas a VL has a japanese engine made by Nissan, who at the time had one of the best and most modern engine design and assembly plants in the car industry. Its the same as the VN's with the 3.8L V6... these things were ****ed, yet its the same engine as in a current VX Commodore with only a few technology changes. I don't know of any engine these days that is fully designed and built in Australia. When you think about the fact that Holden use a Buick engine, and ford use an american design... The 253 V8's in the VB, VC or VH were pretty slow, and you really can't go past a VL with Nissan engine. It was probably the smoothest package Holden have released VX Included.

They are the best engine ever put in a holden. Even the new VXSS with its American ls1 engine dosn't compare with it. The ls1 are notorious for the oil consuption problems which means u need a rebuild. My VL is 15 years old and i have owned it since new. I have never had an engine problem while my dad with his SS has had an engine rebuild already due to oil consuption. A holden dealer even told me that he rates the Nissan engine as being of BMW standerd he reckons its the best engine ever released in a holden.

I was under the impression that holden made the RB30s under liscence which would mean they were built in the same dusty crappy factory as 253s.. (holden do have vacuums you schlong) you are a tool MY88VL VXs are heaps smoother than vls what the hell are you talking about. having been in both I know which I'd prefer. The buick V6 is a *little* different to the ecotec, and if you think they are so crap why do you drive one? The ford six is Australian as far as I know, don't quote me on that. 253s are tough and go hard for the ancient desgin that they are, and they sound a near sight better than a NA RB30. Id like to see how smooth and ****in brillaintly fanstastical nissan's sixties engines would be in a VH. Maybe the RB30 is as good as a bimmer donk but does it matter when ur droppin it into a skyline or a commdore? hahahah! No. A mate of mine had a HQ premmie with a 253 it went ****in hard, it never died, ripped burnouts 7 days a week and was quickish (no rocket but good all the same), sounded pretty mean too

Old Gold what the hell are you on about? I was merely stating that compared to the Nissan engine plants, the holden one is like a tin bloody shed. While the VX may be smooth, i don't think its a nicer package as the VL based on the options of the time. The buick V6 was pretty rough when Holden grabbed it and threw it into a VN, there was clearly more time spent on development of a fresher body style than developing the engine. Ecotec has made a huge difference and that is why i didn't buy any V6 model below the VS. From what i have heard, the Ford V6's are an american design, but then i may have been fed a bull**** story. I'm not saying that the 253's weren't tough when worked, but in standard form, and in something like a VH with the wind resistance of a cardboard box, they were pretty bloody slow.

meh i drive a vl and a vx and i think the vl drives a lot better, the vx handles better than the vl but i prefer the feeling of the vl's, vx's you sit too high, the stereo and lights r in **** places, vx's sound **** when redlining em and they're too big and chunky old gold ur as smart as my shoes thats my 2 cents
