G'day everyone, Is it true that you can put the lsd 3.9 centre from an autor31 skyline into a vlt?? If so does it go easily into the housing? Cheers, Scoota

From what i have heard - dont take it for gospel though - is that the diff to get is a r31 skyline SILOUETTE diff apparently they are a 4.11 lsd 28 spline that will fit the vl happily - cheers -

Ive heard that all r31s have the 28 spline "turbo diffs" and the centres are interchangeble, i think auto were 3.9s and manuls were 3.7s

...I think R31 Skyline Silouette diffs were the only ones to come standard LSD? You may struggle a bit to find one though! I've heard you can use Skyline 3.9 or Pintara 4.11 crown and pinion gears in a VLT centre to change the ratio as they all use Borg Warner diffs. The pintara centres are 2 pinion (weak as piss) centres but the pinion and crown gears are useable for changing ratios in a 4pinion 28spline LSD.

vl's , skylines and pintaras all use borg warner 78 series diffs, VL n/a and pintara use 2 pinion 25 spline , VLT and skyline use 4 pinion 28 spline. Skyline sillouette and GTS came with LSD standard.

The Skyline gears may fit, but they are no where near as strong as the VLT diff gears. Vas at Keysborough diffs showed me the difference in size between the two. For example's sake: The VLT gears are the size of your thumb, while the Skyline gears are allot thiner in comparison, ~ half this size. Apperently the VLT gears only come in the standard 3.45, 3.9 or 4.11, but don't quote me on this one. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Skyline second hand crown wheel and pinion gears in the 3.9 ratio are renoned for creating annoying diff noises. Also they are getting harder to find these days but you can buy new gear sets but they come at a cost and I've been told by a diff builder that sometimes even the brand new gearsets can create a bit of noise. It's a little price you pay for performance.

the bloke i've been talking too about my diff said that the 3.89 skyline gears are known for developing noises but the 3.91's are o.k. ???

I rang a place, and for a new lsd centre and 3.9 gears he wanted $1500, at that price i would rather buy the lsd centre put it in myself, not change the diff gears, and then when i get my auto done, put a big stall in it. Do the diff gears really need to be changed if your looking at high 11's low 12's? Not 9/10 seconds?

From what you guys have said i am presuming that i can get the lsd centre from a skyline sillouette and then use my existing 3:45 gears and retain my original diff ratio. :?:
