hey guys been having a bit of trouble with the speedo signal that comes from the dashboad. Car drives perfectly 90% of the time but occasionally this signal is interupted and the cruise control cuts off (usually until restart) auto also play up simultaneously and shifts without any ECU assisstance (ie no kickdown and wrong changes) I have had the dash apart a million times and have swapped the actual speedo sensor over for another one but the problem still exists in exactly the same manner. When it stuffs up justt like the car would behave without the dash board. problem seems to happen more at night (maybe) but this may be due to lights being on and lowering overall voltage, would this affect the sensor? Is there anything else anyone knows that could be investigated? Any help is greatly appreciated, ta

i had the same problem. for some reason it was only in afternoons that it played up. very annoying! i just swapped the speed sensor for one i got from a wreckers (whole speedo cost me $15) and its much better... now it cuts out maybe once every few weeks. i tried swapping the auto computer and it did nothing.. only other suggestion is that the wiring is bad somewhere.

mine annoys me too - but i'm going manual with the new motor in the next few months.. so i cant be bothered spending so much time and effort on something that rarely happens!! i also gotta put up with tailshaft vibration, strange idle, bad wheel bearings, near-dead auto.. etc.. lots of little things. but since its an n/a and i'm going turbo most of its gotta go so i'm just leaving it..

i had this exact problem on my calais.. spent heaps of $$ at an auto sparky trying to track down an intermittant problem... to cut a long story short, it ended up being the park/neutral safety switch (believe it or not)... replaced that, never had a problem again...

yeah luke do as insane said. also , check the cable where it joins to box , also on the other side of box , there is 2 plugs. they will no doubt be full of dirt and **** , pull them apart , and by some "WURTH - CONTACT OIL" THIS IS THE BEST QUALITY CONTACT CLEANER. dont waste ur time using wd40 and the likes. anyway, do those 3 or 4 things and shell be sweet as.

OVL087 it is good that WURTH gets a mention. they sell a lot of good ****, the best thing is I work there, so get to try out everything ( Sorry this is completely O/T) By the way WURTH don't sell to the public, only mechanics, auto elecs etc etc.

Same here in both vl's i have owned :? I stuffed around with the sensor alot and eventually traced it to the connector on the back of the dash, one of the corner pins is for the speed sensor and it had a dry joint to the circuit board. Actually there were a few pins with dry joints. You can spot a dry joint by looking for cracks in the solder around the pin, any crack at all will cause a bad connection. Just go over all the pins with a soldering iron and some fresh solder. I haven't had a problem since.

havent had a look at the neutral switch yet...too busy twin vl, I actually took the entire dash apart a few weeks ago and resoldered all the circuit board pins, yet it still plays up  and so does fuel guage again as of tonight

changed neutral safety switch but played up again soon after i then took the entire dash apart and resoldered all the pins on the circuit board (again). also used circuirt board cleaner on the sensor itself and on every connector seem to be good, no probs today but have to wait and see.
