I am looking at making cams the next mod for my engine. I have an NA auto with extractors and a sports system. I am thinking of going with I mild cam to get the best overall benefit rather than a low or high cam. I am not after freaky performance to tear the door off everything off the street either. What do you guys think? Does a mild cam seem the way to go? I got a quote from Crow and they said $207 for their High Torque cam (VL30NA) and that I should replace the springs at the same time, which is $139 for their Heavy Duty Valve springs (5833-6). Do these prices sound any good? I have done much shopping around yet am I am hoping to have you guys shed some more light on this. As for as brands etc go I don't care, I am just after the best price/performance ratio :-) Also I don't need prices on labour, got that taken care of for the time being. Although if anyone knows a cheap place to get them done, pass it on :-) Oh....also....is there anything else I need when putting in new cams????

www.sure-cam.com Theres a list of RB30 cams, the one that you want would be the HXY109 its a mild cam. Heaps of low and mid range power, very driveable, and suits the auto. Putting in valve springs would help the top end as well. These cams require a chiptorque chip which are a bit expensive. Check out www.chiptorque.com.au for a dyno sheet and prices. Putting in a camshaft in these cars can only be done two ways. The first is undoing the engine mounts and lifting the front of the engine, and the second is taking the head off. Both are time consuming and costly for a mechanic to do. So decide on the money you want to spend first, some people say its not worth it, just put in a turbo motor, or buy a turbo but that would cost probably twice if not three times as much and a lot more time.

I spoke to a guy at Wade cams in North Melbourne and he suggested just regrinding the current ones with a 933 profile for $125 rather than wil cams. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

yeah you could do that, $125 is pretty good. Surecam one is more performance orientated. There is a regrind without any other mods available as well. But if you're like me, then you want to get a big difference if you're going to all the trouble of putting it in.

takes about a day to put a cam in.. i did this myself with a friends help. just undid one of the engine mounts and lifted the motor up about 3 inches so the cam cleared the radiator. pretty easy to do.
