How do you tell if the AFM is dodgy?

How do you tell if the AFM is dodgy? My fuel economy has drastically dropped recently, i'm only getting like 300km from a tank, this is a n/a vl btw. I've been told by a few people that it could be that the AFM is stuffed, although I would have thought there would be a drop in performance if it was the AFM, which I haven't noticed a performance drop, it seems to be as quick as it always has been.

I'd suggest looking at other things first and then use a process of deduction. Theres a few posts around on this subject, try all that out before going to buy parts that you might not even need. If your car drives fine then its probably not your AFM. Try getting a new fuel filter?

Well the car needs a service, but I'm just thinking that a normal service isn't going to get me back to the usual 450km's i was getting from a tank around town, thats why i'm thinking its probably something more serious like the afm...

Just a thought, Poor fuel economy and still power wise its ok, could be something like leaking injectors, or a fuel leak back to the return line to the tank?? Its worth checking. Aslo a soiled air filter would cause crappy fuel economy. Power loss as well, could point to the AFM, but really they arnt the kind of thing that stuffs up very often. Your more likley to find the wiring to the AFM to be ****, rather the the actual AFM itself. Try cleaning the connector to the AFM with some WD40 and unplug and plug it in a few times to clean the contacts. Good luck guyz Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

when adjusting the airflow meter by the little screw, do you turn it anticlockwise to lean then car out (adding more air) and turn the screw clockwise to make the car rich (rescricting the air)? coz a self diagnosis from the computer told me that my car was running rich ...

scary- the AFM richens or leans out the mixture by increasing or decreasing the fuel into the engine. clockwise=richer anticlockwise=leaner tune until both green and red LEDs flash together.

yeah im gettin the drop in fuel economy, but no real drop in preformance too. my fuel pump was always a little noisy, but in the last month or so it has gotten really pretty loud (u only really hear it at start-up). would a dodgy fuel pump have anything to do with it?

If your fuel pump was on the way out, it would have the opposite effect woudln't it??? No fuel would be getting to the engine. I changed over the air filter, the old one was dirty as, damn cold air intake, it seems to be idling better on start up now, dunno about fuel yet, haven't filled up as I have hardly used the car all week, but the guage isn't going down as fast Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

yeah my exhaust has that black stuff in it to is it normal? i didint think so but my dad says its just from when i start it on cold mornings not sure though seems abit wrong to me also if it means anything the bit of concrete in my garage where my exhaust always is when i start up is coverd in this black crap. i thought it might be oil but i duno i only thought this cause thats what it looks like id doubt it though cause my oil level vertually never changes and i check it once a week.

n/a88VLsl:- My car is black around the tail pipe and spits that black watery **** out the exhaust also, i think its got something to do with the cat being stuffed. Im getting a whole new exhaust system soon so ill see if the cat is the cause. My car never uses any oil either and has great fuel economy.

yeah maybe it is the cat because my car has a 2.5 inch exhaust on it and extractors but im pretty sure the cat is stock maybe the cats ****ed or could it be because the previous owner hacked out the cat instead of buying a free flowing one? would hacking the cat cause this black stuff?

do your cars lose coolant? could be a cracked head/blown gasket and the water coming out of the exhaust when its started after sitting a while.

no my car isnt loosing coolant. also if it were a cracked head/blown gasket wouldnt i loose some power? if i would then i dont think it could be either of these things as i havnt lost any power.

My car doesnt lose coolant either. And it doesnt do it as much now the weathers warming up abit, id say its just condensation getting blown out the exhaust and picking up some black crap along the way.
