OK, I've got a very weird problem here... 86 Exec VLs came with AC right? Mines got the 3 AC Positions on the Air Conditioner controls and its got Stickers in the engine bay saying that it was Retrofitted in 1998. And the compressor looks fine, but my Air Con doesn't work... Also theres another thing, under the Glovebox area, near where the carpet ends, theres an Adjustable Pot with no knob covered in black Tar stuff with 2 wires coming out of it (One Brown and the other Dark Green). Theres also another length of thick bare wire (Like Fence wire) that comes out of it and makes its way up into a hole in the Large Air Vent... :? I've tried adjusting it and from what I can tell it does nothing, its pretty hard to explain, so if nobody has any idea what I'm talking about, I can take some Photos and post them up... If my Air Con has in fact, lost its Gas, then considering it has already been converted, how much would it cost to get it fixed, and whats involved? Anybody know? Thanx, any help would be appreciated Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I think it costs somthing like a couple of hundred dollars to get regassed from memory (dont quote me though, it might be a bit less actually)... My air-con is freezing, if it's working you should be able to tell if it's on or not, and it'll loose a little power driving as well, also it hisses everytime you swap in and out of air-con mode, but it might just be running out of gas, not somthing you really mess with yourself, go to a mechanic and get it checked once you're sure Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Mine hisses too, but I'm pretty sure thats the Air Pressure moving to Open/Close the Vents since it happens on all Holdens even the ones with an AC On/Off Switch. And theres no loss in power or higher idle speed. The reason I wanted to know whats involved is because I like to know what people are doing to my car when they work in it... That's what you're little vacuum chamber [black ball] behind the bumper does. Quote: Originally Posted by Midz ... I mean do u care if some pacific Island goes underwater coz of the melting ice caps? It's not the pacific islands i'd be worried about, if the leak where ever it may be isn't fixed, you could be pi$$ing into the wind just re-gassing it. It may work for a day or even a month. But it will stop again... Then you will have to repair it again, bodgy or not it's gonna cost you in the long run... Why not get some one who knows what they're on about to look at it and quote. Then at least you know what you're up against...

Quote: I mean do u care if some pacific Island goes underwater coz of the melting ice caps ? Geez... sounds like the kind of thing a complete wanker would write. anyway.. sounds like you car has the complete aircon system in place, the reason id say it isn't workin is either the gas is out, or ur fan switch is faulty (like thousands of vls out there) you shouldnt have to worry about those lines covered in the tar like substance. What you should make sure of tho is that all the pipe connections are done up nicely and that there are no visible leaks. good luck with your aircon problem, however if u decide to ditch it completely because of the cost to re gas, its a fairly easy job. cheers. I've always wondered what that funny looking 'Black Ball' thing did... Anyway, I'm not worried about that dodgy switch thing, I just want to know what the hell it is and what its supposed to do. I mean, it doesn't look like the sort of thing Holden would've developed. Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll sure look into it since its getting hotter now... 8) Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Mine has this weird control as well .. again like yours, hanging from what looks and feels like coat hanger wire. Seems a very dodgy install, compared to the rest of the car. The connector seems like the rest of the holden plugs tho, so maybe it was a late adition or something. My car's an '87 SL with factory aircon (also non working, needs a regas and new seals .. qouted $400 from holden). I'd be really curious to know what that switch/control is .. Its obviously in both series 1 and 2 cars, with yours being '86 and mine late '87 ..

Has yours been Retrofitted to comply with the new Tree Huggin' Environmentally Friendly Standard? Because my first impression was that it might be a modification for that? :?: Also, as for the plugs, I'm thinking they might have been taken off a factory connection since they fit onto just about anything...

Far as im aware, it hasnt .. the large sum of money holden wanted was to retrofit it for the new gas crap ..So i doubt itd been done on my car .. Not sure how to tell .. It looks like its been there for a long time tho .. as per you, i've tried turning it .. doesnt seem to affect anything ..
