Hey all this is my first post on this site. Basically I own a 1986 VL commodore series 1 auto and i'm sure you all know that in this series the transmission when in D will change from 1st to 2nd at around 50kph. I was wondering if i can possibly change it so that it will change into 2nd at around 70kph instead. A mate of mine has done it but is unwilling to tell me how. He said something about a block of wood and something about the accelerator. Can anyone help me out here???? thanx

Pull out the black plastic panel that covers the top of the pedals. They're held in by three plastic screws. Find the end of the accelerator pedal right up into the dash. When you push the pedal down you should see it contact an electronic switch that gets pushed backwards. Its a creamy orange sort of colour. You will probably notice that the switch does not go fully back when your accelerator pedal is floored. Get a piece of garden hose about 1.5 cm long, and a small hose clamp with a screw tightener. Put the hose piece over the round part of the switch that the accelerator contacts, then put the hose clamp over the piece of hose with the screw part facing the accelerator contact. Tighten the hose clamp accordingly, you don't want it to fall off. This should give the switch enough travel to go to the end of its housing. Enjoy! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I've heard this been done before, but what does that switch actually do? The Throttle is opened by a manual cable so I didn't think there was much else to it. Also, is there supposed to be a black panel above/around the Pedals, because mine doesn't have one? :?: Its an 86 VL Exec Auto...

Well i did this to my car in about 2 minutes last nite. Now when i floor the accelerator it will go upto about 70 in 1st instead of 45. Thnx heaps lobe grinder. Oh and Kylie, my car is also an 86 auto and yes there should be a plastice cover type thing that clips onto the lower parts of the dash with screw things and runs across the top of your padels so you dont see any wiring or stuff

Ive read about this before, but never gave it any credit until I read this one and thought Id give it a go. It works! My NA Auto now revs out to redline when I floor it.

haha witness my super saiyan power! Kylie it is a gearbox kickdown activation switch. If you don't have a black plastic panel above your pedals, then you should be able to see right into the dash from underneath. You guys will also notice that even when you're in 4th gear driving under 40k's your car will now kick down to first when you floor it. I had done all sorts of mods to my car before this, doing this alone made it go way better then i ever expected.

But is it good for ur gearbox??

i wouldn't say that it is "good" for your gearbox now that people will be redlining first gear just because they can now, and couldn't before. But some people don't have this problem, because the switch is set in the right place from the factory. So therefore i look at it as getting the switch to work properly.

if i floor mine it changes at roughly 70 into second, then i put the bit of garden hose on and it chnages at 70 still :S oh well it was worth a try i dont really wanna go much harder then that in first anyway Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Might have to try it... mine likes to rev tons up to about 50 and it's just picking up power and then decides to casually drop into 2nd... *grumble* this wouldn't happen in a manual *grumble*

Have a go platinum, you will find your car much more enjoyable. And if you find that you are afraid for you gearbox just take the hose and clamp off, and then u can go back to granny mode auto. I've tried doing this to an R31 skyline, but alas they use a different switch and even modifiying that didn't get the same result as what my VL does. I have a funny suspiscion that the autos in the skylines are different in someway, either with the box itself or the control module. Now i'm going to try a VL switch on the skyline, see if that works.

It's not really worth doing. Who wants first to go to 70? The motor would be screaming like a bitch, and it'll use more fuel. Why not just manually shift?

Only when you flatten it, not talking about normal gear changes here I'm gonna try it when i'm home for the holidays (READ: lack of hose). Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

With this mod, how will it act when driving normally? eg 0 - 60 normally would change to thrid by the time it reaches 60

Doing this only changes what happens when you give it full throttle ie. when you flatten the pedal, otherwise it acts exactly the same.

GoldVL, Thge reason most ppl dont change manually with an Auto is because it does if for you hehe hence the name. Its not a "mod" so to speak, its factory standard, just over the years the bracket bends or whatever, try it, it feels heaps better when you gun it.

I spent 30 mins under the dash the other day seeing if i was able to adjust the swtich more towards the pedal instead of putting hose on it, turns out it was gonna be one hell of a job. Didnt have any hose, so i just stuck about 6 layers of double sided tape on the top of the pedal where it would contact with the switch with the same result. Mine acts as per normal (changes at 3000 rpm) until i really push the pedal down (ie, when ur mad and slam the foot down on the pedal). Drops down to 1st from 55kph too (which cant really be good for the box, but gives me a good boost since my powerband is alllll the way up there !! hehe)...

i didnt have to do nothin to mine, mine usually hits 70-75 b4 changing into second, but when i let it hit 70 it looses to much power b4 hitting second.i let it hit bout 60 then back of just a touch then slam it down again in second.but a problem i have is my car hits about 125 before changing into third but when it changes into third, its like the car has no will to go so i have to put into 4th hear(o/d).does anyone know y that would be?mine is an 88 model btw.

mine pulls hard right round till (presumably) past 6200rpm, so the more it revs out the better hopeless down low though.. lol... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
