Ive got a...well....prolly useless but interesting idea for an intake on a N/A vl....
My idea is to insert a 240V 100mm electric fan (run off a 12vdc to 240vac inverter) that say can be capable of moving around 200cfm or more (there are ones out there) into the air intake pipe say before or after the airbox, dun matter, to kind of provide a more healthy air flow into the motor. Some problems with this idea is that if the motor starts sucking more air than the fan can provide the fan will start to become a restriction in the airflow?? Does anyone know how much air would be moving through the intake at say 4000rpm??
seriously man, try it
i thort aye.... a turbo is just a strong ***in fan that pushes air inato the engine and runs off exhaust rite?
well, wots the diff between a turbo pushing air in and another kind of fan?
obviously, the turbo would put more air in there than a fan but look at the cost difference!
thats y a cold air intake works so well... air is being pushed into the engine and its nice and cold like it is from a cooler
Yeah, if you have a look around ie. ebay. You see there are lots of people trying to sell ridiculous kits to fools with neon coated civics.
I think that the engine would be sucking more air than the fan could push at high rpm's anyway.
Whatever you do dont buy a kit that claims to increase your horsepower by electric supercharging. If you really must try it (hey im all for experimentation) do it yourself with some budget materials.
And tell us how you went

I read in the latest Street commo mag that a guy (Brett Wayne) has mounted a huge rear mounted (in boot) radiator and 2 massive thermo fans in his Black vk. A contender for horsepower heroes!
Loks good to!

Ok dude i have though about this before, using computer fans etc.
I looked at turbo zet and even using an air conditioning fan.
In theory it would work but heres your problems.
Like you said if you mount the fan on the mouth of the intake it would cause a restriction at high rpm, but provide a ram charging effect.
However because we all have a hotwire air flow meter, this constant air charging, at idle might cause the AFM to read that the engine is ingesting air, and correspondingly cause idle problems. That is just a theory though, and you could possible wire up the fan to only come on when you are accelerating. I don't know how you'd do that.
I guess the first thing to do is go out to your car with a small enough fan mount it infront of your filter and cold air intake and see if it does anything weird while your car is idling.
thanx for the replies. I do electronics so it would be easy to hook it up to spin up during acceleration instead of having it full on all the time, and like you said off at idle....just need to change the voltage travelling to the engine depending on the rpm... I might give it a try within the next couple weeks and ill get back to you's on how i go....

is that e-RAM thing for real?
i wonder if those dyno results are ridgy didge or what?
looks pretty wikked tho.... but i guess just adding a pod filter would make a difference... i would like them to add the fan to a regular air box without the pod and see how that goes

Man those dyno results are so obviously dodgy.
On every car even a finely tuned porche they get 5 extra horsepower exactly.
haha
BTW. you gonna need a fan that moves at least 300CFM too make any difference. More to get a decent RAM effect going.
Thats a ****n crazy fan
Its a good idea, but its not hardly worth the time and money to do it... Considering you would have to get a pretty fast Fan to do the job, that would cost a lot on its own. If you really want to get a bit more power (and I mean a BIT), then just buy one of those e-RAM things for about $345 (Delivered to Aust, I think) but personally, I wouldn't bother. I wouldn't want something in my Car called 'e-RAM' even if it made it go faster anyway... 8)
