im getting a new exhaust on the vlt and have chosen the usual 3 inch off the turbo but i was thinking of getting a pipe put through the cat to....
a) decrease cost and
b) create less restriction
however, upon talking to the exhaust bloke he reckons i should just go the high flow cat cause he reckons ill "lose boost" with the pipe through the cat idea.
i can understand there not being enough back pressure for NA cars but for a turbo car, i thought the less restriction, the better.
will I 'lose boost' with no cat or is the bloke just trying to get my money ?

I could be wrong, but im sure the 'loosing boost' situation only applies if your running the standard T03. Anything bigger i.e T04 ... and a gutted CAT apparently is beneficial.
Im currently running a gutted cat at the moment, and have had no problems with loosing boost ect ect, boost still comes on at about 3500rpm range ... which is supposively normal.
God help me the day I am tested by the EPA though
p.s sorry if im being a bit vague... im freakin tired

 go somewhere else, this "doode" obviously knows sweet FA, do you really want someone who doesnt know what they are doing to make your exhaust?
the turbine wheel creates more exhaust backpressure than you will ever need, even on the std t03, anything after that is a restricion
are you getting a new dump pipe created, if not at least grind off the cast lip inside the std one, you will see what I mean if you look up the back of the dump pipe towards the turbine & wastgate. this reduces backpressure significantly

turboluke: yeah im getting a new dump pipe so the lip on the original one wont be an issue
skottey: are you running a t03 still??
so the perception here is that the gutted cat will be more of a benefit than a hinderence?

he just doesnt want to fit your exhaust without a "cat"
he and you will get in the **** bigtime
FOR THE RECORDS it would be better WITHOUT cat, but then you risk a $10000 a day fine for knowing that you have a gutted cat.
your choice :P

the new 7 litre cat's are pretty darn good flowing anyway, just think, boost her up to 15psi and within 1 year, the cat will gut itself anyway

I would probably go with a hi-flow cat, but the best is no cat. What I did was knock the guts out of mine and said here put this on. I could safely say that most VL's today would have a **** house EPA rating anyway, as if all that pollution gear still works after all this time.

I agree with turboluke's comments entirely

04-09-02, 15:31 GMT+10#10 on my old high flow t3 i had a brand new cat on it it wasnt making power on dyno so we dumped exhasut and wathed power go up at least 60hp ( i **** you not) ran no cat and power stayed up. u want NO pressure at all on that exhasut wheel so your turbo can work

They arent that expensive.
Dont gut your Cat and **** the environment up the ass for a 10hp gain
