Hey all. I've been wanting to put in an RB20DET and R32 5-speed 'box into my automatic RB30E powered VL for some time now, but I've started to get different ideas. The reason I wanted the RB20DET was for the fact it was turbo (of course), twin-cam, and the lot would end up being fairly cheap for parts. But things have changed and now I've been thinking about getting an RB30ET motor with computer and turbo and all other ancilleries, and using an R32 5-speed gearbox on the back of the RB30E. I know this will fit, but I'm interested to know the power handling capabilities of this gearbox, I'm only after around 200rwkw or so max at the moment. Also, what other parts might some people foresee me needing..? E.g. starter motor, 5-speed tailshaft, clutch pedal assembly, etc. I'm thinking that the motor should cost me < $1500, and gearbox around $500, so budgetting around $2500 for parts should cover most things I hope. I plan on doing most of the work myself. Cheers, Craig.

..you should be able to get the R32 5 speed with the engine if your lucky - most of the RB20DET front cuts etc are from R32's so try and get the gearbox with the engine in a front cut or something. I think the R32 5 speeds are very similar - if not the same as the RB30E 5 speeds? Should be ok if you look after it.

I did want the RB20DET in my VL, but after seeing a mildly worked RB20DET powered VL in the wet struggling to get sideways my mind has sort of changed. A mildly worked RB30ET powered VL should fit the bill nicely I believe. I think I'll try and get an R32 gearbox and do the conversion to 5 speed behind my RB30E for the time being while more funds get saved up for the turbo motor. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

The R32 turbo gearboxes are apparently not too bad, but are not a patch on the R33 turbo box. they are very hard to get hold of though. Go the RB30ET way, better I rekon. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

RB30ET should offer more potential than the ECCS RB20DET I believe, the only real thing the RB20 has over the RB30 is a twin-cam head design... and we all know how well an RB25 head goes on an RB30ET I was quite surprised at the RB20DET VL not being able to kick it out sideways in the wet very well, my N/A VL can hold some decent powerslides. A question, how much power and torque at the rear wheels should an RB30ET make with a manual gearbox, with a 3" mandrel bent exhaust, 11psi boost, K&N filter in box and cold air induction? I've seen R32 gearboxes going for around $500... not sure on R33 'boxes. No-ones answered my Q yet How much power at the wheels should I expect from a RB30ET 5 speed running around 12psi boost, 3" mandrel bent exhaust, K&N panel filter, and cold air induction? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I dont want a real fast car.. I just want something streetable and cruisy, power all throughout the rev range. That article in Zoom, was the RB20DET in an R31 Wagon, or was it in a VL? It's wierd, a while back I would post saying "I want to put an RB20DET in my car" and all the replies were "Get a RB30ET" now I say I want an RB30ET and all the replies are "Get an RB20DET". Weird. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Rb20's are crap engines, and the price reflects that, you can have 1000hp and rev to 10000rpm but its the torque the engine produces that makes the car go, just look at rotarys, all revs, no torque.
