you know the noise when you put your steering to full lock? well times that by five and thats how mine sounds all the time! it comes from the actual power steering pump its self
any ideas on the problem ?
thanx
we have a commodore vp model and it had a problem with the power steering. It was making lots of niose and pumping smoke out everywhere. It turned out to be a combination of fluid leak and dead power steering rack. The pump running dry makes an awful sound so check for leaks etc. and get the rack checked as well. hope this helped

As the guys have said, check the rack.
Fluid leaks will be the main cause but keep an eye on the rack.
I know this is a big problem in the VR/VS Models.
ah yes, the dreaded squeal!!
Same as full lock squeal, except now it happens when i start up for a few seconds
I HAVE noticed that i am leaking Power steering fluid (couple of drops), but my fluid resovoir is full - perhaps the leak is before it reaches the pump?
so what am i looking at, a new rubber hose - is that all?
also, can the full lock squeal be stopped?

It's actually a big problem from the VN right through to at least the VS. And it's a pain to fix.
i had a lot of trouble with the power steering on my VL a couple of months ago. here are some tips.
leaks.. check all hoses and clamps first. mine started leaking from where the pinion and rack join so i got a reco rack. would be wise to check all hoses before you do that though
noise.. if its a groan or a crunch/vibrating sorta sound, check fluid level. if its full hopefully its just air in the system, that happens after you fill it up from dry until you turn it lock to lock a few times. also check that your hoses arent loose - especially the one that screws down near the pump. i undid the screws to clean up some of the engine bay, forgot to put them back in, and it clangs against the sump sometimes while turning, and makes a bit of noise.
squeal.. most likely the belt. they have to be rather tight and are a bit of a pain to set right if you havent done it before. put a spanner on the pump to hold it up while you do up the bolts, usually starting with the lower front one first helps.
belt squeal is usually on full lock and as somsone else said first thing when starting in the cold.
hope that helps.
