What are your thoughts on custom programmed UNICHIP's on VLT's.
Anyone had good/bad experiences with them?
Are they really worth $1000?
Cheers

I dont think they are worth the money, but it depends what u want it to do for you, if you want to make a small amount of change to mixtures etc then it should be fine for that.............however
The other thing you should be careful of is: Unichip is made by APS (Air Power Systems) who used to be known as Safari, the owner of both is peter luxon (Safari used to be known as Luxon 4x4 centre) he is an absolute tight ass, If you ever have a problem with it you might aswell through it in the bin, lots of people have been happy with his products, but I can tell you there are ****load that arnt especialy if they have had a problem.
One of these people that wasn't/isn't happy is my dad bout 2-3 years ago dad bought a 4.5L Petrol Nissan Patrol, on his old GQ Diesel he had a safari (now APS) turbo system. He wasn't happy with the power from the 4.5L new car so he went and saw peter, who sold him a $8000+ turbo, intercooler, zaust, etc ,etc system It was supposed to bring the power up from about 90-110kw at the wheels (I think) to 212kw at the wheels which it did, at first.
When It was first done it was great but after a while it started to loose power, It has become that bad after about 6 months that dad took it back their and made them put it back on the dyno, it only made 135kw at the wheels, dad asked for them to fix it and peter told him he would have to pay for EVERYTHING, not just parts or half or anything like that.
I used to work for a company who dealt with APS, so Ive heard a fair few stories about **** they do to people with problems, and not one of them Ive spoken to has been happy with the result.
But anyway I'll stop raving now, just be careful
good for just changing mixtures, but doesn't have alot of the features you may want/need.
its a piggyback system, so it still uses the origonal cold start, etc of std computer, just allowing for the mixtures and timing to be changed.
better of paying a little more for microtech or wolf which have alot more features.

I reckon this is the way ill go one day, All I really want out of an ECU is to have more scope to adjust timing advance and a bit more fuel. guess it depends on whether you want to keep modifying your car for max power or if you are going to be content with what you can achieve with a UNICHIP.
ultimately a proper aftermarket ECU will do everthing a UNICHIP can, a UNICHIP is just makes better economical sense if you only want and will be content to go so far with your modifications.
UNICHIP is quite a good product.. its map sensors, etc are almost identical to Autronic/Motec, therefore the tuning and use of it is quite developed and easy. The only difference is that with UNICHIP, it dosent offer any fancy un-necessary features that Autronic's does, that are offered with Autronics due to it being designed for racing cars/boats. UNICHIP is a product that suits the everyday driver, due to it being a piggyback, and therefore u retain your standard ECU, it means u'l get perfect cold starts, as per normal, and is quite a reliable product for the everyday driver. It can be seen as a microfueller with much higher reliability levels, and a much finer tune.
Better off paying just a bit more and getting an autronic

This is of course why Bullet Supercars chose the autronic sm2 over any other ecu for their toyota v8 powered mx5's. It was all those un-necessary features that allowed them to tune the engine so it would pass the current emmision standard for new vehicles. ADR 37/01. Of course they should have used a stock ecu with a unichip.

Autronic#1
..following our previous discussions re. Autronic vs. Haltech. I may have access to a second hand Autronic system which has come out of a guys speedboat. Is there anything to prevent me from using this on my RB30?
In other words are the ECU's the same or are there some differences between ones set-up for marine and road?
..apologies for hijacking the thread I dont know much about the Unichip - but IMHO the Autronic doesnt appear to have any real negatives (besides being a little more expensive) for these applications so you cant really go wrong with one. Haltech a very close second.

No, generally there are no differences, is it in a black anodized box, if not then it is not a marine ecu and i would be careful about buying it. Also, if you can give me the serial number which will be something like M####T#A# i will be able to tell you the firmware and map sensor / injector driver configuration. Fear not, it can be sent back and upgraded. PM me with the price and i will let you know if it is a good deal.
