I don't think it would do bugger all IMO
Might as well polish the inside of the pipe for better airflow

hey dude.. i did this to my bros car...
u can either take them out.. or clean them.. cause they get a bit of **** on them ey.. specially if u have a crap filter.
They are easy to take out.. held in my a big circlip (thats the only thing i could think of calling it ?)
use a knife or pliers or both to get the clip out, then the filters just come straight out..
we didn't notice anythin at all.. however its one of those little things that might aid with the help of a cold air intake, performance filter and exhaust..
I also heard from somewhere that they are an intake restriction over 4500 rpm ??
good luck man.
ps i also only advise takin out the one on the back of the afm.. keep the front one in incase anything comes past ur filter..
but if u are fully out for perormance u wont worry..
got a spare AFM here so no need to worry about running both out. hehe

Ive done this, it makes no noticable difference at all but it would only make use in high speed application also when using a cold air intake, otherwise its pretty much usless removing them

I've done it, can't say i noticed too much of a differnce, but a very slight one. I did read though that these mesh's do create the most restriction in the air flow tract, even more so than the air filter!. Like others have said, i'm sure it would all help with the other mods, cold air, performance filter, extractors and 2.5 exhaust.
Autospeed have done an article on eliminating negative boost on a Vl Turbo.
Basically the outcome was the AFM mesh was the biggest restriction in the entire inlet track.
So your better off to remove the screens than say by an aftermarket air filter as it technically will have more of a gain, as the filter was hardly restrictive at all.
All their results were backed up by testing, so you cant argue with the facts.
