I picked up a Tacho Dash on the weekend, and I'm just wondering how to make da Oil Pressure gauge work properly. I know its something to do with the blue wire the connects on the oil pressure switch (which i just replaced) on the side of the engine.
There is a blue wire under the inlet that is taped up, it has the right plug on it to plug into a oil gauge sender, plug it in and your gauge will work.
Ok, I found a wire taped up to the loom, i plugged it in, but the oil pressure gauge still goes wacko all the way to the right.
Do i need a different sender by any chance? i sure hope not coz i just a bought a new oil pressure switch coz my old one started leaking from around the plug
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
errr.....no. i dun think so, i just replaced the one that was originally in there. cost me $50 as well from repco. They didnt have any other sought in stock though...except for one that costs $13.
I mite have to goto the wreckers or something. but is it really worth it to be able to look at my oil pressure?!! I just like everything to be working properly.
djnico: I have the same problem. I bought a Calais dash + Calais oil sender unit, and swapped the sender wire over to the one that was taped up out of the way. As soon as I start it up, the gauge shoots as far to the right as it will go. Revs make no difference.
I have tried to trace the sender wire, it looks like it leads to the computer unit behind the front passenger kick panel.
Has anyone else experienced this before, or can anyone suggest a sound troubleshooting method?
I Also have the same problem with the oil pressure gauge in my VL. As soon as you start up it goes to the far right of the gauge and stays there, or goes up and down from left to right. I would also like to know how to rectify this problem.
The gauges will shoot straight to the left if they are disconected, i experienced this too and found the problem to be a bad connection between the sender and the plug, give it a clean and the gauge should then work.
I've just done this in my car.. (SL) .. bought a calais dash, wiring harness and oil pressure sender unit. Installed just the dash originally, of course oil guage didnt work. (neither did the "REVERSE" light on it.) Recently finally got around to swapping over the oil pressure sender, used the original wire first, nothing. Pulled down the taped up wire from the harness, put that on, still nothing. Eventually pulled the dash apart and swapped the wiring harness over, and now it works perfectly. Also the reverse light works.
What is involved in swapping the wiring harness over?
Is it only the wiring in the dash or does it extend into all the stuff in the engine bay etc?
Is it a difficult job and.. how much do Calais harnesses go for these days?
Its an easy swap .. its just the top harness .. the connectors are fairly low down in the dash and annoying to get at, but its fairly easy once you get the old one unplugged. its just 2 fat chunky connectors. the calais harness ends up with the normal dash connectors, the 2 flying leads for the satelite switches, and also an extra lead for the cruise control panel .. if you dont have that panel, just leave the lead sitting below the cluster somehwere. If you do the dash cluster, I'd suggest doing the wiring at the same time, just to save you having to pull it all out again and do it again. I've no idea on the prices, i got mine as a package. dash + sender + harness, from Phoenix mechanical ..
from the way it seems, the wiring loom in the car itself tends to be wired as a calais .. all the extra features are generally in the main harness .. just all the extremeties of it are all different.
I Have cleaned the connector on the sender but it made little difference. The gauge seems to be inaccurate. When I first start up the gauge will go to the far right or flicks from left to right, regardless of engine revs. When the engine is at normal operating temperature it will come back to halfway when the engine is doing 1500 rpm but as soon as you go to 2000+ rpm it will go back to the far right of the gauge or even off the gauge. Could it be a faulty sender or gauge.
