Hey guys, ive been a bit busy for the past few weeks and i havent had the time to get on here...
Ive found a car, perfect inside and out, although ive come accross a small problem, its rather powerful... as in... too powerful.
Its been tested to have about 250kw, and as u know that well over the allowed power....
What happenes if im caught driving it on Ps and how can i evade getting caught?? lol
cheers
im not up with all the regulations in victoria but a standard calais puts out approx 150kw so unless the coppers have got a dyno in the boot they couldnt be able to prove the power. As i say im not up with the victorian regulations so i dont know if that would work or not
dr00, good choice of words.
Unless you have driven some hi-performance cars for a while, and have gotten a good idea of what driving a powerful car is all about, i suggest you either wind the boost right down so you can get a feel for it and then turn the boost up gradualy as you get used to the power. It can be VERY scary in the wet, espeically when things start to happen unexpectedly, and you cannot react quick enough in 'pannic mode'. is it auto or manual?
who was the previous owner btw? is that 250 at the wheels or at the engine? thats a lot of mumbo in any case!
how much are you picking it up for
Take this into consideration, the person who bought my old car, bought it as his first car with no expereince. Its now written off. Sad to see, lucky he is ok.
In NSW there is no such rules you can have a twin turbo 800 horse moster and its legal. my mate went for his p's in a blown 350ci hq. Its about the only good things weve got here in NSW in the way of laws
Yeah its off a mate, i know its alright, im not planning on drivin it round at first, obviously too powerful, but hes desparate to sell as he just got his VN SS and has no need for the car. If i want it, hes askin $6500, its in mint cond. i cant refuse!! even if i just put it in the garage for a while... lol
I know its a beast as a first car but tell me u wouldnt be interested if u were me!!
cheers
My mate is 19 and has a 10 sec VL (ON-PROL) old rajab car cops pull him over all the time but dont know **** it is registed as a VL turbo not as a VL turbo with 300KW so the cops can only assume that it is stock i dont know weather they can make you dyno it or not at a sertain place does any one know if they can ?? :?
cops go off the stock specs
i'm been pulled over many a time with cops saying i'm not allowed to drive it, i just reply with yes i am and they shut up
it's too much papper work for them.
i got fined once but complaned and got it canceled
vic laws state you cannot drive an overpowered vehicle or modified vehicle on p's, i dont know where the law comes in a grey are i spose.. as a set of extractrors is a modification, and so it a full managment system and T66???
but anyways the good news is that if they do **** you (unlikely) then its considered as failing to obey a licence condition and its a whopping $105 fine and no points, !!! sweet !!!
most cops will ask you if you can drive it, just reply with the list i obtained from vicroads states that you can drive a vl turbo on p lates.. they cannot argue with this as that what the officail list says, and it shows you ar enot a ****head and have actually checked..
so more than likely once you say this they will simply agree and canary your car for good mesure! hehehehe
catchya
Take into account that in Victoria the police can be.... not very nice at times.
They CAN put your car off the road for any reason they see fit. (whether it's a real reason or not)
They can also unroadworthy the car and require any number of tests be done at your own expense (including dyno), and if that happens, the car won't go back on the road until they are satisfied with the results.

skyline chick this is VERY VERY VERY RARE. i've been pulled over many a time and had conovos with power to weight and not once have they said "lets take it to a dyno" or anything of the sort
Hey guys,
I was at VicRoads not long ago and requested a list of cars that are classes as High Performance Vehicle (not suitable for P Platers) The has a lot of cars on it... a Metric F**K load of cars. The Power to Weight Ratio is calculated using the basic car, without options for the weight, this make a major difference. If i've read the info correctly you CANNOT drive a VL Turbo on your P's. However i've seen many p-platers do this. I'd be checking with VicRoads before you invest in a car that you potentially may not be allowed to drive, because you can loose your license for driving i high powered vechile while on a probationary license in victoria.
Also you inter-state folk, you must abide by Victoria Probationary License laws whilst in victoria. Same with Vic P-platers that drive in other states, your Vic Restrictions still apply in other states. In QLD you dont have to display Learner or Probationary Plates, however, if you are a Vic License you still must do this. I lived in QLD for 2 yrs with a VIC Probationary License (i wouldnt change over to QLD license because they only get 4 points ahahahaahah ) and if i didnt have p-plates up, the cops if they wanted to could be pricks and give me a hard time about it.
im sure that you drive a Calais turbo VL then your still allowed to drive it as the power/weight is still good.
Perhaps in a BT1 then you might have some trouble, but really, they will get you for a heap of other ****, such as EPA, canary, rims, too low etc rather than too powerful.
I think its a fine and no loss of points if you do get caught driving a high powered vehicle.
Also consider this: a VN SS is illegal, whereas a VQ V8 Statesman (VN Statesman) is ok, due to the weight of all the electrics.
The cops can presume that if they can see an intercooler then your car would have over 200kw at the motor (If the boost is dialed up) Automatically it would be too powerful for the road in a bt1 and even a calais. Its not also the power it produces but the torque.
the power to weight ratio in vic is stated that you can drive a car with a power to weight ratio of 125kW per tone or a car with the capacity which is 3.5litters per tone wich ever one exeeds this is therfore ileagal so for a calais turbo that weighs in at 1383kg you would be able to drive it to a power of 172kW nothing over ( I think my calculations are right)

either way, you cant win with the law enforcement *cough*. If you drive your car, you get a canary, if you ride your bike, they can actually canary your bike too, as well as give you a no helmet fine, and if you walk, well they can get you for jay walking when you cross the road!
Cant win, either way you get screwed, so its best to try and lay low. Its very prohibative and it does scare people away, but they want to ream you, they will happily.
The biggest scam is the Insurance Conspiracy. A friend whos 20 years old, driving a 1.5 litre civic sedan in all 60kw at the wheels glory, is quoted $2000 for full comp insurance by a big name company. Some companies wanted $7,000 to insure a turbo imported car, and i got quoted about $4,000 for my calais turbo. 3rd party is pretty harsh considering its a higher premium due to age, and excess can be as much as $1000. Seems like its easier for the law to go against owning a high powered/modified car by making them unaffordable. Wouldnt be supprised if there was a little gentlemans agreement between the police and insurance companies to raise premiums to restrain young drivers. A little far fetched, but you never know these days
