Engine running hot.....

The calais has been running slightly hotter than usual and I'm stuck for what is causing it. I have replaced the thermostat, new coolant, and radiator cap. I was thinking maybe the water pump or the tubes in the radiator are blocked up. The top hose doesnt feel really hot and the bottom hose is dead cold. It seems to be happening after the car has been running for a fair while, even on the H'Way. Any ideas? :?:

This happened to me after dropping the RB30ET into the Skyline. Was fine around town but when i got on the highway, she got really hot. Then the oil turned milky...... NOT GOOD I thought it was thermostat.... checked that and fine Waterpump.... fine Turned out to be blocked water galleries around the pots at the top of the block. Had to change the head. Put a ported and polished head with AVO stage 3 cam on (manifolds aren't matched though) with the naturally aspirated inlet manifold. Haven't really noticed any increase in power although running the stock auto computer with the 5 speed. I'd try giving the cooling system a very good flush if u haven't already got milky oil or using any water. If this is the case, you've either done a head gasket or cracked the head. Benji

HAHHAAHA.... na its not the cooler Kris.... it has been doing this for a while now..... long before the cooler went on. It doesnt use any water..... and no the oil isnt milky. Its just really weird. Some times its fine, others it just runs hotter. I think the water pump was dont about 3 years ago. I remember the previous owner telling me he had it done and it does look new. It used to do it before i changed the thermostat. With the old thermostat, it used to run on about the 3rd mark and sometimes it would go up to about 4th or even 5th mark. When I put the new thermostat in, it normally runs on the 4th mark. But sometimes runs upto the 5th. its really bazzar. Another small problem that may be connected is that i have bleed the cooling system about 6 times, but i can still hear a bubbling sound in the heater box when you rev the engine. Any ideas on this one?????? Thanks

Have you tried taking the radiator cap off and starting the car and then looking for bubbles.......if you see them...blown or leaking head gasket.

Hey, I think that if the bottom radiator hose is cold then you are alright, it is not overheating.

Just a question, but do you still have the factory plastic fan shroud that goes around the fan?? Removing this will cause the car to get hotter, because the air flow cant be directed as well. But, you would notice it the most at traffic lights or when driving really slowly (ie under 20kph).

with air in the head it will get hot really quick. my hoses where cold to warm, but the gauge was reading red hot. i had to keep bleeding mine from the top bleed valve until all the air was gone. now it sits between the 3rd and 4th mark when i'm up it, or 170-180F on the autometer gauge.

hey all when my parents owned a vl n/a many years ago it started over heating everything to do with cooling and was replaced and the temp gauge was not faulty. It ended up being the fan clutch that come with the standard engine fan it was faulty so that fixed the problem and everything was sweet

Okay, heres an old ford fix that works rather well. Take your top heater hose off at the firewall, and hold it up as high as it can go, and fill from there. Cars often get an airlock in the heater 'cause it ain't got enough water. Stops the circulation and the car runs hot. But, I think the VL's have those little bleed bolts on the intake manifold, so I don't know if this will work properly.
