hey guys i was just wondering your opionins on getting 6*9s in the rear parcel shelf,
I really wanna get a set, and already have some lined up but i was wondering what the best option to mount them would be, considered that metal will need to be cut to fit them in ( i think)
so do ya think i should, make up a thicker parcel shelf and see if that helps
put them on spacers (i heard the sounds quality goes down if ya do this)
or just cut the metal and mount them into the original parcel shelf?
Hey Man,
Just my personal opinion, you're better off buying good speakers for the front and just put 6" 3-Ways in the back...
As far as sound quallity goes, 6x9's in a VL are ****house. I was told this by one of Melbournes leading car audio competitors, who also recomended all the gear for my VL.
Rear speakers should only be there as a rear fill, and not to be a full on source of music. You can get a decent set of 6" 3-Ways alot cheaper than good 6x9's.
Just a thought
i got a box on my parcel shelf with 6x9's mounted on it but because the box is thin they sit flat on the wooden base of the box, them and jbl 6.5" splits in front all running off headunit, u get awesome top end sound and feel a fair amount of bass in the front, u sit in the back seat and u get blown away with bass tho, i haven't heard a car with 6" in the back but i'd recommend it if you could do something like mine, my box is just 17mm mdf with an acrylic lid on top, all mdf was carpetted to match seats and theres a neon in the box too (for all you neon haters) that looks pretty mad at night, the box i made sits flat on the parcel shelf already in there, if your interested i can give you the dimensions i used to make mine
Hopefully i can get some pictures of it soon

it goes something like this buddy! If u dont have a sub then grind away the holes big enuff to fit the 6x9's and make a good shelf, i use a 18mm mdf formy shelf, make it secure also-16mm mdf is also ok aswell. But if u have a sub then do as previously mentioned with the 6-6.5" speakers as all u need them for is the rear fill and all should be well. G00d Luck
I really dislike the box type setups, they look really ugly The first thing I did was rip them out and replace the box and speaker with some real ones -- you might have to invest in one of those right angled screwdrivers or one of the kind of angled spanners if you bolt them in to reach the rear set of screws/bolts.
I have mine bolted into the chassis so the *******s can have fun destroying half the parcel shelf to get them out, just gives me the satisfaction that they can't get them out, even if they can stick a screwdriver or whatever through the cone.
just line them up properly, i've seen some shockers installed

my box looks mad
platinum has no taste :P :P :P
hopefully i'll get some pics cuz i reacon it does look good, sits in line with the back of the seat so it's not massive and out of place
heh, no they are pretty shocking if they're the ones i'm thinking of... but lets see the pics...
(nice win today nightmareZVL - was going to try and catch you after... but you already left. )

i had 6x9s and a sub in my VL sounded ok
.. i have 6" all round running off a 4channel Xplod amp, and a 12" Alpine ZR running off a V12 amp... i rekon my rear fill sounds better now than my whole system did in the VL..
6x9s are a compromise between treble, and bass.. so if you dont have subs, 6x9s are ok, with a decent front stage... but if you have subs, dont bother with 6x9s... cos they are gay....
ok look at ur shelf and back seat, theres about a 7-8cm height difference, my box is 8cm at back, 7 at front, sides shaved so it's on a slope with an acrylic top case with the whole cut, 6x9's are mounted to that, so u can still see everything when looking behind you, the shelf has no damage if you want to sell it, and since i have black seat covers the black carpetted box suits it well, the box just sits on top of the parcel shelf and is by memory around 14cm wide (from window to edge of back seat) and it runs along the whole shelf from side to side, if anyone in bris carindale area has a digi camera gimmie a yell
:P
What i have done is made up 2 boxes for 2 6x9"'s (Sony Xplod's, i found they dont perform that well, not too bad though). They sit on the original parcel shelf and are bolted in, i covered the boxes with black speaker carpet. I have a 12" subby in the boot so i have the 6x9's running through a highpass crossover (crossed at about 100hz).
Ill try and get a photo of it to post.
i made up an mdf parcel shelf for mine and bolted it down using the threads in the parcel shelf for baby seat mounts. i didnt have to drill or cut any of the car either.

I just finished mounting my Pioneer 6x9's in the parcel shelf and I didn't have to alter the frame of the car at all. As long as you cut the parcel shelf correctly and the centre of the holes line up correctly 6x9's will fit.
As for mounting speakers in the plastic spaces...THEY ARE CRAP! For the last two weeks I was putting off doing the parcel shelf and used the spaces instead. The moment I powered the speakers up after installing them directly into the parcel shelf I noticed the difference. Much better sound.
i had my 6x9's bolted to the underside of my shelf. Sounded really good and best of all you couldn't see that they were there from the outside as the carpet goes over the top of the lot, looked like an empty shelf. when the car got solen, the *******s had to take out the entire shelf to get them out(criminals are so thick. probably couldn't work it out)
Hey Fellas,
If you want to go for 6x9's in the back of a VL, you should head to JB HiFi and see if they have any "custom" pods there.
I have a set in the VS that are trimmed in dark vinyl and they look sweet. For memory they're around the $180 mark but don't quote me on that as they came in the car.
Anyway give them a go, and i'll get some photo's on the weekend...
