Nothing to worry about if it's black smoke...means running rich thats all. Sensor problem or AFM.
Only worry if it's blue or white smoke

i have had all sensors replaced recently and its running 12psi, i was also told that if the air filter was old this may make it blow black smoke. but i was also told that if it blows black smoke the turbo may be f!@%ed is this tru.

hey all, black is fuel as said b4,blue is oil(rings) and white smoke can be a number of things getting burnt eg, brake fluid, power steering fluid, water and if your turbo is fuct there will be a constant bit of bluey/white smoke out of your zorst and then a big puff when u take off. black is just fuel nothing else

My car used to blow a ****load of black smoke on startup...
turned out to be 3 injectors leaking...
get your injectors/fuel system pressure checked

21-08-02, 10:01 GMT+10#11 Mine was doing the exact same thing. Took it to Turbo Tune and it turned out to be a hole in my intercooler (not actually a tear or puncture but a bung had come loose). They fixed that, gave it a tune and it's running better than ever before.

01-10-04, 04:46 GMT+10#12 MY VLT is doing funny things I start it in the morning turns over after first 2secs no black smoke ,but drive it for a while and then leave it start it again it takes longer to crank and it idles a bit rough for like 30secs and it is blowing black smoke but then comes good?
I have checked the AFM ,Coolant Temp Sensor the Computer Codes on ECU checked and reset ,all that comes up is the Knock sensor code as I have no wiring from ECU to knock sensor yet.
Motor has just been rebuilt and Injectors all cleaned etc... New plugs and leads ,oil /oil filter air filter ,Only thing I havent checked if Fuel Filter but was replace 10,000k's ago and the motor has only dont 1,000k since rebuild so far any Ideas or anything I have missed out on?
I didnt have new Fuel Pressure Reg as I bought 2nd hand one off the forum a year ago but it has been tested and holds pressure ok..
Any Feedback welcome guys.
Cheers, Joe

10-10-04, 00:09 GMT+10#17 Will not having the Knock sensor wiring installed yet cause the Black smoke on startup?
As I dont have the wiring yet but the knock sensor is in the block.
All ECU Codes have been checked and the ECU reset and it only comes up with the knock sensor code ,due to the wiring not installed yet..
Any help greatly appreciated VL Brainiacs..

10-10-04, 00:48 GMT+10#18 no to your question
and as far as the knock sensor is concerned , dont even bother with it.
just keep ur timing , fuel and boost on the sensible side of things and u wont need to worry about chances of pinging , therefore no knock sensor needed.

10-10-04, 01:21 GMT+10#20 The ECU runs rich from cold start, there may not even be a problem with blowing some black smoke at startup?
