hello again all ive gotta replace my steering rack on my vl. it was going to just be a seal but since the rack is stuffed i may as well as replace it now. i need to get it apart tonight or im stuffed as i need the car back monday few questions if anyone can help now, i'm extremely frustrated and stressed! sorry for the wrong terminology or whatever but i dont know whats what sicne the stupid gregorys book is patheticly vuage and the max ellerys one even worse. 1. how can i remove the tie rod ends from the wheels? 2. how do i remove the tie rods/whatever they are called from the rack (they screw in). also i need to put all this back together (obviously). the manual mentions another special tool to screw the stuff (again dont know the name) back into the rack... and it needs to be torqued up? thats it. everything else is apart now. i bought a tie rod removal tool (like a separator) and by the look of it ive damaged a boot for a ball joint, yey. please help me someone!!!

nathan if you buy a new rack , itll normally be an exchange , and the tie rods are a part of it , no need to take them out of ur one. getting the ball joints off can be a ccuunntt , i normally use a steel dolly (like a cold chisel) , and tap it off. also mark approx how far the ball end is on the thread of the tie rod. so u have a basic idea where to put them onto the new tierod so as to not affect ur full lock to full lock turning. apart from that its quite easy to do. with the new rack itll have new seals and new boots etc , so dont be to worried about tearing one. goodluck andrew

i ended up getting off - someone from performanceforums had a chat to me as soon as that was posted. i have a free alignment with bob jane still so that should be pretty easy to sort out. i just hope i can get the tie rod ends in roughly the same spot. the boot i broke was on a ball joint on the tie rod end so i will be needing a new one Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
