Had a look at the last night and they aren't hooked up to the head unit using speaker wire but some funky connector with 3 wires. I was looking at replacing them with Pioneer speakers, but to my knowledge new speakers can only be hooked up with speaker wire. What's the deal here? How do I hook up new speakers?

I just replaced my Stock VL 4" Speakers with Pioneer 3-Ways. You will need to run new wires to each speaker because the Old Head Unit used a Common Ground and if you use this with your new Head Unit, it will most likely blow the internal Amp on the Head Unit or external Amp if you're using a seperate Amp. However if you're using some new Speakers with the Old Head Unit, then just use the Old Wiring, it would be much easier. To connect the new Speakers, you can either cut the old connectors off and attach new Crimp Connectors that fit onto the New Speakers, or make a length of wire with appropriate Connectors on either end to go from the Old Connector to the New Speakers if you want to keep the Electrical System Original... It might all sound a bit confusing, so just ask again if you're not sure of what I'm talking about... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

When you run new speakers, i'd recomend using new cables anyway... 14 to 16 year old cable can be pretty dodgy. So just go to someone like JB HiFi and ask for some speaker cable... it should all be similar, and not too expensive.

The reason I said to use the Original Wiring if using the Old Head Unit is because it has to be different than if using something Aftermarket. And running new cable with the Stock Radio means cutting the Wiring Loom for the Radio. Also, the wiring isn't half as dodgy as the Head Unit, it must have been the best Hi-Fi Car Audio Equipment around in the 80s though considering how hard they made it to get the damn thing out... :?
