Hey all, just a few quick ones,
I have read that a few of you have removed the mesh in the air flow meter. What benifits does this hold? more power?
also if i was to advance my timing to 20 BTDC, what power increase can i expect, will it be noticable? I already run the car on 98 RON fuel.
Its a std NA vl, 5speed, with usual sports exhaust.
cheers guys
removing the mesh screens doesnt provide a noticable feel, rather it provides peace of mind that youve provided one less restriction for the air to pass
theyve written an article on full boost on the matter i believe that showed that the mesh screens did provide one of the largest restrictions in the intake process.
advancing your timing should provide a bit more response down low
I have removed the mesh screens and have my timing on 20degrees BTDC. I also have extractors and 2 1/2" sports exhaust. I run premium unleaded, i find the power to be pretty good, but i have never run standard timing so i wouldnt be able to tell much difference. The mesh screens didnt make that much difference(if any). I am currently in the process of adding a cold air intake to my standard intake box.
Thanks for the fast replies.
Morgz85: I'm intersted in how your planning to add cold air into the std box. I was thinking of cutting a hole in the bottom of the box (and sheet metal underneath) and running a pipe up to the front bar. But i wasn't sure how the authorities would react to such a modification. And ideas?
Also is 20 BTDC as far as you would want to go? what about running 98 RON fuel?
I will be doing mine the same as what was done on the AutoSpeed website http://www.autospeed.com/A_0779/page1.html
except mounting it a little different to underneath the box. I will be cutting the 110mm hole in the bottom of box and guard below it to fit the 45degree piece through, i will have a bit of sheet aluminium or similar and riviting onto 45 degree piece (hard to explain, if u have msn ([email removed]) add me, or email me ([email removed])) and i will send u a 3d image of what i will be doing.
I wouldnt go beyond 20degrees BTDC because you will start to get detonation, pinging etc. could ruine the motor. 20 degrees is optimul.
I am not sure about running 98 RON fuel, i suspect it would be similar to premium (having a high octane rate).
Thanks for the info, i checked out that site and it looks good! I'm still a little concerned about the wallopers. Would this render my car unroadworthy at all??
I wouldnt think so, all your doing is letting the engine breath better The pipe isnt an obstruction or anything of the sort so i would say not...If you want to know for sure you will have to ask someone into that area...
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
well many people consider it to be illegal because you are cutting into the body of the car which is a NO-NO. (the metal under the air box)
but not many people are able to even recognize you have a cold air set up if you do it neatly. leave the box as is with the snorkel, but cover the snorkel up. the pipe runs underneath and to the bumper. paint the piping black so that its less obvious.
good luck
Umm removing the mesh filters in the AFM will decrease restriction in the intake.. however, its probably best to just remover the one after the fine wire inside for street driving. Its just extra backup incase **** comes through the filter that could take out the fine wire.
I heard they were an intake restriction over 4000 - 4500 rpm ?
If u go to the track, by all means remove both.. but for just the street and the minimal performace gain.. its best just to remove the latter one.
With advancing the timing.. its best if u run PULP when u run 20 deg btdc or more.
I think anything over 20deg might be a bit iffy.. no one seems to say to go over 20deg
if anywone wants a basic drawing of a very effective cold air intake setup for a vl.. email me.
later
Ollie
you'll need PULP or 98 to run effectively with advanced timing. I used ordinary unleaded for a while until i realised how much it was drinking.. 22 litres per 100km! Plus it runs baaaaad. I think mines on almost 20 but not sure. Getting a new belt soon, gonna get it all set up by an efi performance bloke in ozbourne pk.
