Ok- dunno how many here even have the VL V8 - but here goes.... the Calais was being a pig to start and then filling the carport (and street for that matter) with smoke once I finally got it on and splutering. I'd never dealt with the choke so took it to my mechanic and he fixed it.... several days later - it's reverted back to how it orignally was, but this time I fixed it coz I now knew how and it was great for the next start up.... but it seems to have buggered up yet again and is doing the same ****. Once it's been around the block it's fine and it seems better to start when it's warmer (ie at midday) but why would the choke keep doing that??

This probably wont help you out or answer any of your questions but with my old 308 VK Calais when it was cold i had to give it 3 or 4 good pumps on the excelerator before starting and then put my foot down abit when i turned the key. If this wasnt done exactly like that the car would refuse to start. It took me 3 weeks to work this out after i bought the car, but when i did it fired into life everytime 8) .

Yeah it's a bit figety like that (I've had her for 3+ yrs) but this is different from just a few pumps - thanks anyway )

Auto choke jamming, so it's flooding itself? Other option would be fuel injection Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

mine was a prick to start to, at least thieves will flatten the battery before its started  When I go me carb rebuilt n stuff, they ripped all choke parts out. It was heaps easier to start with auto choke, put pedal down once and vrooooooooom babada ba Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Well I was going to get the carby recon'd etc soon anyway, so I think I'll just be bringing that forward a bit )

How can you like the carby Girl Torque???? They use more fuel, are harder to start and less power as well. Sorry but the VL V8 with carby was the worst V8 holden made. It was their febble attempt to convert to unleaded.

each to their own - I won't bag what others run and I'm happy with what I have.

"Sorry but the VL V8 with carby was the worst V8 holden made. It was their febble attempt to convert to unleaded" it wasnt that bad, just had some breathing issues, people like you give any car a bad name by giving your opinions when you got sweet **** all experience with them. I can think of ten other holdens that are far worse off than the VL V8 muppet Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I'm aware that it was a fairly poor V8 - the unleaded and emissions really killed it - but hey - I love my girl and I love V8's - I figure I can get a bit more than the stock 122kw from her yet ) One thing I'd love though is a better note from her - my other half has a Sandman with twin exhaust - man - that's an exhaust note!! D

Gee Roof sorry for giving my opinion. We better ban all opinions eh??? Girl Torque you're the one with the car and are very reasonable about it. I love V8's too...had a VS 5 litre and loved it more than almost any car I've had. Carbys are just well almost antique and I can assure you that if you converted it to EFI you wouldn't look back. Heaps more power, better economy, easier starting and better reliablity. Good luck with it Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Well I have had an EFI vehicle and while the power is there, I cannot work on it and did have troubles with it. We're into older Holdens (67,77,82,87) - antique is fine by me - at least I understand it and if it breaks down I have a bit better chance of fixing it than trying to find which of the 100 relays it was or trying to figure out what the computer code means. I think it's great for those who have efi and know the in's and outs of it - all my respect to ya - coz I'm buggered if I can fix them! LOL! Hey Roof's just being nice )

"Carbys are just well almost antique" yerp, they are antiques, but most if not all quick drag cars run blown carb or NA carb setups over the EFI dont they.. (quicker than 11 sec's etc..) hehe Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

So you'd advise everyone with EFI to convert back to carby then??? Give GMH a call quick so they can change the soon to be released new model Commodore back to carby. Drag cars run extremely low tyre pressures too and straps over the engine in case they blow........does your car ???? Must be a bugger to repack your parachute every time you stop at traffic lights! He he he!!! Lets lighten up eh? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
