Ok guys, some more help needed. I've got about $350 to spend on a head unit for the new car, and was looking at some players. My friend just bought a JVC mp3/cd player for $350 and I was wondering if there was anything similar in the Alpine or Pioneer ranges for a similar price. I checked the Alpine website, but it doesnt seem to have any mp3/cd decks at all... Any help?

Woo. Looks like I'll be going JVC. I HATE having the same stuff as other people I know. Meh, at least I'll get a couple of 10" JBL subs and some 6*9's eventually... Any decent priced Alpine amps that'll handle that setup? Also, are JVC decent? I haven't heard any horror stories yet, from my mate or this board.

Hey mate, The JVC's actually one best range of head unit last year. They did it with just word of mouth marketing. Whereas you get the likes of Pioneer who practically sell they're head units in servo's... JVC just started selling them and let word of mouth go... and the manager at work has one and loves it. Never had a complaint at all. As for the amps, why spend a heap on Alpine when Kicker are probably cheaper and stronger?

Woah. Once again you guys have saved me from looking like a **** in public. Example: Me: "Ugh, hi, do you have any alpine units for $350. Rest of store: *die of laughing* Me: *is forced to shoot up place to regain pride* I think I'll go with the JVC, and check out Kicker for an amp. JBL still wins in the speaker department, as far as I'm concerned.

Another stupid question you guys will definately be able to help me with: Assuming I have no amp, no subbies (ofcourse) and only the stock Executive speakers in the front (on the dash - i dont know if they came with them in the back, but my parcel shelf has nothing) and VERY limited cash, would it be stupid to put splits in the back, and run anything else through the stocks in front, or should I get 6*9's for the back, run the stocks, and save for splits for the front? Installation isnt really a problem, because my cousin is an auto elec, and will do it for cheap. Basic question: Should I put two splits in the back, or two 6*9's, or should I put either one in the front and leave the back speaker-less??

hey mate, it all comes down to if u want to go subs.... i have currently 2 * 12" subs in the boot with the 6*9s on the parcel shelf and splits in the front.... but what i had to do was buy capacitors to wire in series for the 6*9s to cut out alot of the bass.. so ur mainly getting treble.... (when u got 6*9 and sub bass it interfears and cuts each other out... not heaps... but yeah) so yeah really there is a way around if u got 6*9s.... if i was doing my system again i would have splits or 6.5" 2 ways in the parcel shelf in the back and splits in the front ..... then subs in the boot... but with the capacitors it works just as well.... hope this gives u a an idea... basically if u want decent bass for now run 6*9s in the rear and run the stockos in the front till u can afford splits.... then if u ever get a sub just do the capacitor trick... easy and cheap...... well catch ya l8r -Mike

Jet Pilot, Can you explain the capaciter trick to me in more detail? ok, for starters i dont know **** about electricity sound, basically anything to do with physics. I have a 2001 model dual voice coil pioneer subby in the boot and 2001 Sony Xplod 2 way 6x9s on the rear parcel shelf. I have noticed a bit of cutting out but i dont fully know why, how can i use the capaciters to fix it? cheers Hutchi

hey, what u will have to do is visit ur local carsound dealer (for me it was northfield) then buy the capacitors... (u will need 2) what it will look like is a battery with 2 wire pieces comming out of one end.... what you will have to do here is cut the positive wire to the speaker(closer to the speaker... or wherever is easy accesible) and solder in or basically just join in series the capacitor... where u cut the positive wire for ur speaker u just join one end to one wire part and solder and join and the other to the other end...... ur car dealer will no more about it cheers

Forget about putting high frequency drivers in the rear as it will only make the system sound worse, only bass drivers should go in the rear of the car and spend you money and time getting the front to sound right you'll be much happier with the results..... Forget 6x9's they are only good for geminis and celicas.....

hey Murdercity, you wanted to know whether to put splits or 6x9's in the back... i can tell you what ive got if that helps... in the back... ive got 6x9's in a custom mdf rear parcel shelf... (apparently mdf gives better sound quality.. but i didn't really notice much). then i run a daewoo amp straight to the 6x9's. that amp only cost $200.. plus $20 for rca's, cables etc ($220 all up). the guys at motoquip said they were good value for money and no one had ever had a complaint about em. and i agree... its been excellent. then in front.... i've replaced the factory 4" speakers in the dash with pioneer 4" splits. and the tiny tweeters sit in the door... if you do this make sure you take your time working out where you put them on the door... cause once you put the hole in your door...... you cant be moving em ! hehe we didnt know what we were in for when we started the install... it took sooo long... damn VL dash ! good luck whatever you choose ! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
