Well I'm currently looking for a quaddy to perch atop my recently pieced together and dyno'ed motor. Following is some info I have. Any more that people could offer would be much appreciated, and also the names of any shops that sell, or modify quaddies would be very helpfull. I have found a couple of good articles on quadrajets, but can vaguely remember having another one (in street machine I think) by perkins or someone of similar fame. If anyone has any more articles in magazines I'd like to see them.
Here is some of the other info I have, please add or correct:
- From what I gather, there were 3 different quaddies used on 308's. The third being used from VH to VL. This is obviously the one I'm after.
- I have been told using HQ series quaddy metering rods in a VH onwards unit will richen the secondaries up.
- VL quaddies are different again (this is contradicted elsewhere I know!)
- Big cams cause big problems with the idle circuits on quadrajets
- The heat tubes from the manifold to the choke bear some significance to the secondaries (this makes no sense to me whatsoever, and everyone I have spoken to other than this one person say it is crap)
- The US quadrajets are ok if you can't get an aussie unit. One guy at a carburettor joint said they aren't as good but are close and will do the job, another said don't get caught out by the US quadrajets.
- The 308 units flow 780cfm, however a magazine stated if they are measured the same way as holley's it is actually 650 to 680cfm.

Well I can't offer any advise but I'm interested in what you find out as I wanna recon my Rochester Quad soon too )
I think I'll get the secondaries played with but leave the primaries realtively stock so I still can drive it sensible and have petrol in the tank or give it some stick and then the power and petrol chewing come into play )

A mate of mine owns the laurie oniel sle brock and his hdt papers said the rochy was blueprinted to 740cfm. when brock did his interview with street machine he said he should have stuck with the rochy from the start (L34 days) but didnt have the parts/technology avail in the 70's. one of brocks old mechanics Ian Tate should know how to tweak it (depends were u live). We got quoted $250.00 to rebuild the rochy off the gp 3 and when u get it done spend some money to tune it on a dyno (they charge $130.00 in cairns to do it). I have read in a magazine that they came out from 600cfm to 780cfm rochies.

Well that price sounds about what I'd expect to pay. My dilemma is I wouldn't want to give them my whole car - just the carby - do you think a carby place would have a spac about that?

Girl Torque, I'd say they'd be more than happy to have you rock up with just the carb.
I've read through the magazines that I have, and found some further info on the www, consequently I think I may try a few of the mods myself. I'll by a reco (rebushed + new gaskets, rubbers etc.) and modify it. I just have to make sure that the carb is the right one. Cheapest I've found so far is $285 + $80 due to non exchange. There was also a guy I rang in Shepparton Vic. who was quite helpfull. Here are a couple of sites I found:

Anybody got an idea as to how to get in touch with Ian Tate or one of Brockies Mechanics as suggested. I thought about contacting Perkins Engineering but I don't think they'd play with this small old stuff anymore.

im currently researching mods for the good old quaddy and found they are a complex carb but with correct mods & tuning they are far better than a holley.
if you can get your hands on a set of secondary metering rods from a 350 chev quaddy and slightly bigger primary jets along with some other mods and youll have a carb thatll support a mildly worked 308-355
