I have cracked the head on my vl and i was curious about what sort of options i have, is getting a new head my only option or is there other things i can do to fix it. If i do get a new head what sort of things should i do to increase the power of my car other than port and polish???

Would take it to someone with the right gear (for testing) and see if they can weld it back up. Might be 2 far gone, never know might be lucky. As far as performance goes port it (polish if you really want), new hi-perf valve springs and larger valves. Then drop a perfomance cam on top.

Backpedal a bit.......how did you come to the conclusion that your head is cracked??????
Could it be something else? Blown head gasket?

No i am not exactly sure that it is a cracked head but a few people have told me its a warped or cracked head. Is the head gasket cheaper if so i hope its that . Anyway what happen is my engine over heated and i then waited for it to cool down and poured water into the radiator and then reved the car a little bit and then claggy dirty mud looking like **** bubbled out, (water mixed with oil.) and i was told it was a cracked or warped head so yeh...

It MIGHT only be a blown head gasket.
You won't know until the head is off.
Don't panic yet.
Good Luck with it

i just put a reco head on my vl. it cost $490 plus $70 for gaskets and it was not a rewelded head because i was told these crack again most of the time anyway. i have no idea what labour will cost u to get it done but it will probably be a fair bit.

i've heard that once the heads are rewelded properly, they are usually stronger than they were before they were cracked. i had mine crack and had it welded - no probs since

sweet na: Agree with you.
That's what I've been told too. A properly welded up head won't crack again.

22-07-02, 00:29 GMT+10#11 If you are only loosing a small amount of water from your radiator system, then what you can do is buy a small container of metal shavings and pour it into your radiator. These shavings will then flow through your cooling system and will plug up any small cracks around the head area. It does work as I have done it to my VL. I was loosing a small amount of water everytime I went anywhere and I got a pack of metal shavings and tiped it into my radiator. No more water loss. Its great and only costs 3 bucks.
So I would seeing if I could get out of welding or even taking the head off, and for only 3 or so bucks, its worth a try.

22-07-02, 23:38 GMT+10#13 Metal shavings in your cooling system.....you have got to be kidding? The metal shavings would tear at your seals in your pump / cooling system and cause leaks. Plus plain old metal would rust and crap up your system. Plus it could cause a bad form of electrolisis (how ever you spell it) and totally root up your system.
Go the Bars-Leak (or something similar, get it from any auto shop) if you are desprite for a fix. This whole metal shavings thing sounds dangerous to me.

06-08-02, 02:01 GMT+10#16 I've also witnessed ground black pepper stopping a fairly bad water leak in an F100. They owner swares buy it. he just poured the pepper in the radiator while the engine was runing, and with in 60 seconds the leak had stopped, and it was a fairly bad one!
