hey guys i wanna get my windows tinted. i went to a place and he quoted me $330 for top of range tint plus $60 to remove old tint. he also showed me the illegal tint that was 20% instead of the legal 35% he quoted. it is $10 more and i don't get receipt or the written warranty so i've got no proof they did the tint but he said i could take it back and he'll fix it if anything goes wrong. he said i should have no probs with cops because my car was made prior to 94 and i could just say i don't know anything about it if the cops pull me over and ask about the tints and tell them it was tinted before 94. just wondering if anyone has darker than legal tints and what the deal is with this and if the cops have harassed anyone about it. is it worth it?

i have 20% on mine and havent had any problems with the police. It looks good but the one thing i have found is that when driving at night in low visibility areas (read no street lights) you cant see squat outside !

Did a bit of looking around, and found the offical papers on the RTA website (only applys for NSW). http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/vsi03.pdf It does state that cars registered before 1994 can have darker tints (less then 35%) if they were already fitted.

been through all that **** before. It's all well and good if you can get the tint done, and then get a reciept dated oct '93 etc. I went into the traffic dept a couple of yrs ago and got copies of all the laws (theres nothing better than ****ing the cops at their own game! In W.A from memory unfortunately it is prior to 1979 or something rediculous. There is however a loop hole i was told by the traffic dept himself. If you want to put a SECOND glass window on the inside of your door with limo tint (not touching your original window) then you can get away with it. Same as pu tting curtains up in your car. aslong as they are not part of your original windows you can do it. LEGALLY: the only automobiles allowed to have 'limo tint' (%5) are ST John Ambulance and Hurses (carry dead people to funerals) Legally not even general Limosines (ones that take you to balls etc) are allowed to have it. SAME with cop cars, sometimes you see them with limo tint, well they are not allowed to have it either... They are the rules for W.A, not sure about the rest of OZ.... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
