I own a Calais Turbo PSI-03L and it has the standard 5sp in it but it wont be around much longer by the sound of it so instead of rebuilding it i want to go an auto. The car makes 492hp at the wheels and im always thinking about more so what auto can handle it? I dont want to get a 2sp Powerglide cause i dont want it to just be a drag car, can a Jatco 4sp be built to handle that kind of power or should i go a Trimatic maybe.Any ideas would be much appreciated and if you have any ideas on cost $$$$ that would be good to.

Down here in Melbourne the really quick cars that race at Calder and Heathcote use Raceglide's built Tri-Matics or the 2 speed power glide both have been proven to be reliable on the track takeing the horsepower no problems, It's about $5,000 drive in and out for a Raceglide's Tri-Matic conversion on you can save a few bucks a go to the Castlemaine Rod Shop and use the Rod Hadfield conversion kit to adapt power glides, tri-matics, and turbo 350 transmissions although a little heavy in weight they are pretty strong. Hadfield only supply's the kit, example mounts, bellhousings, speedo cables, you still have to get a new tailshaft made up shifter, console and as well as a new Hi-Stall convertor, tranny coolers and the beefed up auto. I have heard of the Ford C4 tranny being used but never seen a VL done with this conversion. I'd go a Tri-Matic with a trans-brake if it were me they weigh stuff all and can take the punishment. I don't think a Jatco 4 speed can handle that power you stated in the long run it will **** it self, I don't care who builds it either if they are so beefed up and can handle the power, then why do all the top cars on the strip use alternatives, in reality a Jatco 4 speed that has been modified with a big stall has problems once the boost is raised past the 15psi mark after that it's only a matter of time before she blows up. On a street car the Jatco is fine as long as you maintain them and don't abuse them. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Thanks for your help i thought the Trimatic would be the way to go and i dont really want to be limited to a 2sp Powerglide for the street. Looks like ill have to do some saving then cause thats pretty pricey but its about what i expected.

Its a 5 puck brass button clutch and it hasnt slipped yet even at the drags with slicks. I got it from Western Clutch in Sydney

If you really want a manual get a r33 gts-t gearbox. Theres silvia around the place with a gtr motor making around your power and it apparently holds up really well.

I been told by a VERY reputable drag transmission makerr to stay clear of Trimatics for drag use instead use a c4 if u want a 3 speed. or a glide

Yeah ive heard a few people talking about going for a C4 do you have a rough idea on what a conversion like that would cost including building the C4?
