Sorry but checking for broken wires and soldering on joints won't do anything. The speedo isn't working and they are cable and gear driven.
They are hopeless, the gears in them slip and break etc. Take the instrument cluster out, remove the speedo and see if anything is obvious.
You may have to buy another speedo from a wrecker.

bugger a wrecker buy a new one. their 130 bucks from holden and you get to start with zero km!! I know its a bit dodgey but hey its legal. All you need to do is keep your old one. Or just do what I do put up with it and do drive carefully.

Take the dash out - make sure the speedo cable is still plugged into the dash.. on my new calais, im going to have to replace the speedo cable as it doesnt click in properly and just sits in there.. give it a small tug and its comes out clean... hmmm... oh well.. also make sure at the gearbox end that it hasnt poped out, also check that it hasnt snapped in the middle - when u turn one end, the other end should rotate too...

hey mate,
when u remove the dash and take out the whole cluster, turn with ur fingers the groove that the speedo cable clips into...
if the needle moves up and bounces down then im guessing its fine and its
ur speedo cable.. check connection to gearbox etc... as mentioned or buy a newie.... if not but, with mine i had a problem with the spring attached to the spline with the needle on it... be very careful not to over stretch it as if u break that spring ur speedo wont work at all until u replace that spring.. but yeah my spring was a bit stretched,... im guessin someone previously had played with it? i dont know, but i got from the wreckers just the little part with the spring.. its 1 screw and a plug to fall out the part... then just install it into your cluster....
(u will have to take the plastic face etc.. off to see all this ****.. and the face display --> the black with green checker plate stuff)

This is probably a stupid question but when i got my car serviced about 5000 kays ago the mechanic said that theres a leak in the speedo cable. I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this up? My car is due for another service now so should i just get the mechanic to fix it up?
Cheers,
Scott

might be the same as "toping up your halogen fluid in your headlights"...
can someone else confirm that speedo cables dont "leak" ?

14-07-02, 23:37 GMT+10#12 pretty sure they can leak where they plug into the gearbox

16-07-02, 19:33 GMT+10#13 Yeah i was thinking it sounded a bit dodgy so i looked under my car and sure enough there was a cable leaking oil (presumably gearbox oil as it seemed thinner than motor oil). i asked a guy at work and he said yeah they do leak oil. Maybe this could be the reason why some people are having probs with their speedo and gearboxes? just a theory.....
