Hey all.
Just want some help with something. I'm 17 (as some of you know) and am buying my first car. In the local, there's a VL Turbo Commodore for $5,500.
Here's what the add says:
Commodore VL Turbo Exec. sedan, auto, no rust, exc. cond. RWC, $5,500.
It's in my town, and after ringing up the guy who owns it, we found out that he's a teacher, the car's done 224,000kms and is gold.
Ok, so it's a pretty gay colour, and it's done a fair amount of mileage in its' lifetime, but it's also pretty cheap. So I'm asking what do I need to check when I go to look at it tomorrow? I read something about checking for milky oil, and rust under the windscreen (it says no rust but ill still be checking), but what else do I need to check out? A mate of mine who is a mechanic will probably be coming along, but I'd like to check stuff out via your guys' advice.
Thanks tonnes.
check 4 oil in the coolant too. i just put a reco head in my car because my old head had a crack that was 3/4 the length of the head but there was no water on the dipstick for the oil. the sludgy stuff was in the radiator and the rocker cover. so check this also.
Well, I went and looked at the car, and it's stock as a rock except for a sports steering wheel.
There really is no rust that I can see, and the car's in excellent condition. We're getting him to take it to a mate (who is a mechanic) to check it out today, and if there's nothing much wrong with it, I'll be taking a trip to the bank this arvo.
Best part was, we rang up the RACV, and it'll only be 11 hundred a year to insure, which (for some reason) was less than what we got quoted for an N/A. It's under my name on the rego and my mum's on the insurance until I'm 21, then I can change over and be a rating 3...unless I claim or hit someone else within the 3 years...
There's only one month of rego left, but the guy said he'll renew it for us. He also said he had to get a couple of things done to it to get a RWC, but he'll get that done before he sells it.
And yeah, the gold's not amazingly bad, but I'm just not a fan.
Update:
There's a slight leak with the power-steering, but it has to be fixed before the car gets its' RWC, and my mate's doing it. He was really concerned about me buying a car with "so much power", and thinks they shouldn't be on the roads, but in space racing NASA.
I'm getting it on Tuesday. w00t!
heheh congrats man, youll FLOG your mates car now, even tell him he can have a head start, then play wit him then over take him, hell feel like **** then hahaha
Good Buy anyway man, tell us how much the insurance is for ya and how ya went about it ay!

I can tell you that now man. We rang up the RACV last night, and I'm gonna get the insurance under my mum's name, and the rego'll be under mine. It's just over $1100 for premium, and I can change it over to my name at 21 and get a rating 3 straight off if I haven't claimed in the 3 years.
Funny thing about my mates car is, he picked me up to take me to see Blade 2 (**** movie) and I told him to overtake this guy on the highway, and he goes "man, the car's lost power...I just found out that it needs all new rings...$2000 we got quoted". The guy that sold him the car reckons he'll do it for cheaper though, so hopefully it isn't too expensive for him.

'A good mechanic' .....they almost don't exist!
If a mechanic says that he is good don't use him.
I had a VLT that I was selling 'checked out' by a buyers mechanic. The guy was hopeless!!!!!!!!!...told me it "wasn't getting full boost"
I'd already owned 5 VLT's at that stage and the one I was selling actually went slightly better than any previous. I told the mechanic where to go and the buyer what a wanker the guy was.
The car you looked at sounds o.k. but it probably has or did have rust...almost all do. Start it from cold with the radiator cap off and look for bubbles....a sure sign of head probs.

LOL, My mum's known him all her life and he's done everything to every car she's owned in the last 20 years. He's good.
Yeah, there's minor (and I mean minor) rust in the usual spots, but it's nothing much at all.
Update for anyone who cares what I'm doing to the car:
- Installed some carpet on the parcel shelf
- New seat covers and mats (black w/ grey highlights)
- Ripping out the carpet and putting in all new black.
Yeah. That's it.
Champagne coloured Cal's with gold trim smack ass as well.
Mmmmmmmm Walkie wheels do it for me and my Cal.
How much are you gettin it insured for?
Did your oldies make you take out life insurance as well :?:
