Hey Guys,
I've got a na 5 spd vl late '86 SL model
When i start it first thing in the morning and rev it a bit to warm it up, it seems to choke a bit, then makes a loud pop sort of sound around the airbox i think. Anyone have similar probs or any ideas on what it might be?
Cheers
Col
My R31 does that occasionally too....does it misfire sometimes when cold when you try and accelerate to?
I think it's air in the fuel rail. The injector goes to fire, and you get nothing but air. The reason I think this is because it's always after the car sits overningt, and parking on a hill or with very low fuel wil cause it as well.

Exactly - if i floor it when its like that it drops all power then makes another pop and then the power kicks in.
Never notices it on low fuel, always in the morning when i start it up.
I was thinking perhaps the AFM? If it wasn't providing enough fuel for the engine to fire properly?
Its being looked at today so i'll let you know what they find
I don't know..the injectors are actually in the very end of the intake, so it's possible you could get a valve seating and igniting unburnt fuel in the intake manifold...or something?!
This was pretty common when I used to drive carbureted V8's.
Regards, Andrew.
I have exactly the same problem, i have a 87 SL. It will start and idle OK if u dont touch the accelerator, soon as u give it a bit on the throttle it will cough and splutter and go below idle. Update on probs.
-Had the car serviced and tuned since then have not had the same issue. Just purrs now. Also had a new muffler and battery put in but i dont think that was it.
