Ok well most of us know how the turbo works and what tou need with it, but say you have a setup like so http://www.freewebz.com/streetmachin...markengine.jpg (http://www.freewebz.com/streetmachines/images/natspeweek/markengine.jpg) with superchargers do they need to have intercoolers? gain much power? more of less than the turbo? need gearbox replaced? diff breaks etc etc take much to set up, and how much are they? Just getting curiouse thats all Cheers Luke Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ok breifly here No supercharges do not need to have intercoolers just as the vl turbo doesnt have an intercooler, yet it still makes exceptional power in comparison to the n/a variety. Turbo charged air is created from 'heat energy and exhaust gas velocity' from the turbines spinning. As a turbo is an exhaust item, it also has a 'free power aspect' as it uses wasted energy so to speak. Being on the exhaust, means that the air will be heated up, which you cannot really avoid. Intercoolers serve to cool down this air, much like a radiator cools down water in your block. The cooler the air the better, but the bigger the cooler, the more careful you have to be with selection, as too big is really bad. In a nut shell, turbo air = hot, which means mr intercooler comes to the rescue enabling you to run higher boost for a given temperature, and it also might have a neglegible 'fit more air molecules per unit area' due to the cooler air. Supercharges do the same thing, BUT they use Crankshaft motion to spin the turbine. In doing so, your compressing air that is engine bay temperature, or outside temp, if you got cold air induction. The air does still get heated, that is due to the compression. If you plan on running high boost, then an intercooler is recommened in BOTH situations, but supercharges can get away with 7 or so PSI. You will also find that 7psi on a super charger, and 7psi on a turbo, the supercharged one might make more power, and have a lot more feel torque once you get past the spool up point, meaning that a supercharger might come on boost quicker than a turbo charger. With supercharges, you an do funky things like water injection etc, with a turbo charger you can as well but the trouble might not be worth it. Superchargers i would say tend to last longer, and do not require a turbo timer effect, switch on and off, and it should be able to handle that. I do remember seeing a GTR engine on display from Japan, wtih a super charger and turbo chargers as well. you might want to note that a turbo charger setup might take '10kw +' out of the engine performance, to replace it with 40kw, while a supercharger might take 20kw and yeild the same or more, due to its efficiency. Superchargers come in a wide variety, from a turbo front compressor look, to a roots, etc.

Thanks Darky, Thats interesting to know bout it in comparison. So to say, what would the setup fee cost in puttin a supercharger on in the car and other essential parts that need upgradeing.....? Any recommendations yada yada??? Whats the water injection as well? Aint eva heard of it b4 not even mentioned with turbos!!!! Thanks Man!!

turbos and superchargers both do the same job - force compressed air into the engine to create more power. they just use different methods to do this i.e. turbo - exhaust driven, supercharger - engine driven. Both setups will increase engine power and therefore require gearboxes, diffs, brakes etc to be upgraded.

A Turbo always makes more power than a Supercharger at the same boost. it takes HP to drive the supercharger from the crank, turbos are driven from the exhaust gasses and it is technically free HP, but the lag is the trade off. Thats why the HP Heros guys at the Summernats have been swapping to turbos, and at the same boost (15lbs) are making more power. I would never fit a Blower to a race engine again, but on a tow vehicle or a mild street engine they are great.

I think in a nutshel the basic premise is that a turbo gets 'Free' power from wasted exhaust and a blower will use useful power from the engine. However, whichever you use the internals of your engine will still need strengthening, along with the driveline etc if you want it to remain reliable. An Eastern states company was selling under the bonnet (Vortech kinda thing) blower kits for about 5k, to suit most V8s. I'll put the company if I remember it.

It would NOT have been a powerdyne or Vortech blower for that price. Powerdynes start at $5500-5700 & Vortech is $7500 upwards. More than likley it would have been a "roots" style blower.
