I was just reading the EPA thread and I was wondering, can anyone tell me if it is possible to get a VLT engineered with an intercooler? What about the BOV? I know that there is a db limit, but do they care about exhaust size? I've read that alot of guys get screwed over with thier VLt's, just makes me wonder if buying another is gunna be worth the hassle. If I do, I would like to get it engineered properly, then when the jacks pull me up, I can tell them in no uncertain terms to jam it. Conversely, will they still demand an EPA test even if it is engineered? If so, will the EPA officer pass the car after seeing the engineering report? cheerz morepsi

I know the AVO intercoolers are ADR approved so the coppers cant touch you if you have one of them fitted.

very breifly here, but since an intercooler effects the emmisions, you would have to pay a lot in emmissions testing and engineering for your car, i would say about 2-3k just to engineer some emission stuff on your car such as catch cans, coolers etc. If your epa skeptical, an AVO stage 2 intercooler, which float around for 600--800 second hand complete is the go, as it is engineered for the vl, and epa legal. AVO intercoolers as you know have the classic crossover pipe which cops look for, as as far as i know, they cant do squat if you have an avo cooler. BOVs are legal if plumbback only, due to the externally venting ones, venting oily oil, and also due to the unmetered air registered making the car run a fraction of a second richer, which the epa tend to go spastic over. Essentially to engineer a car DIY style, it will cost a lot and be a big pain, thats why kits from APS for wrxes and AVO for VLs are so highly priced, due to their neiche. I was told that the epa are going to change thier laws against the intercoolers on VLs, meaning that they will allow ANY intercooler on a VL to be legal. I think an intercooler would pass emmissions on a car, due to it being in a closed loop application, and also it would make the combusion easier. IF you were to go testing and getting engineers, make sure you get a new cat, as if thats all carbonised, gutted, broken, you got no chance. i had a dream to have an invincible by law VL turbo, but that dream is an expensive one Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

darkstar is pretty much spot on. to get an enigneer's u have to rent out a epa testing room kind of thing and put the car in there and test it and everything and guess what. while the enigneer is testing it and it doesn't get within the epa rules, u get a epa notice. HOW ****ED IS THAT. ur trying to get ur can epa legal and they **** u over. i rang up epa and asked all these becoz once apon a time i waz going to have a lx torrie vn 5ltr blown and wanted it epa legal. until i heard that

Just another note there is no possible way of getting an Engineer's Report on a VL fitted with an aftermarket ECU such as Motec or whatever it effect's emissions and does not comply with the relevant ADR compliance. I personally believe even if you do the right thing and get an Engineer's Report for all your modifications you will still get done for something, You can't win these day's the Police and Government organisations have to much power and prey on the owner's of modified cars as an easy source of revenue and go around saying they have done a good job ridding the streets of all these "old bombs" when in actual fact the real dangerous un-roadworty cars still remain on the streets carting family's around the place, for instance today I saw a VN Commodore wagon with baby's in the back seat, the car's tyres were so bald the "canvas" was starting to show the car had been in some sort of accident and had no headlights or indicators and the bumper bar was just hanging on!, now do the Victorian Police ever pull these dangerous death traps off the road, the answer is "NO" they must feel sorry for the family if they put there "Defective vechile off the road never mind the fact they may cause an accident resulting in a "Fatality". So far this year I have recieved 2 major defect's (CANARY'S) and 1 full EPA requesting my car to be taken to the EPA testing station in Rosanna, as I own 2 cars both modified each 1 got a Canary and thank god my VL did'nt get the EPA. I spend alot of time and money on my car's only to be constantly pulled over for no apparent reason sometimes just trying to drive to work, and I reckon it's because the Police are jealous I own a nice looking car or they have been told by there superiours to defect any "Modified" looking car they come across also could be a "Conspirousey" by the Government, VACC and New car manufacturers to get "Old" cars off the road and into "Newer" safer cars as they can't sell enough new cars because car enthuiasts would rather spend there money restoring-re-building an older car. Now I sound like a whinger but I thought I would just express my opinion on the subject.

red rb30 jet, spot on there, but wtf can you do...... you spend a lot of money trying to do it the 'right way' by law, and you get ****ed on for something that is 'made up on the spot' or something that is very trivial. Does anyone know if NOT having a H or Gear Pattern on a manual gearknob is illegal?

Thanks for the replies fellas. It really makes me wonder if it's worth the trouble of getting another VL turbo. I was pulled up in WA about 4 times in my last one, and they couldn't care less about the mods. Extra injector, intercooler, adjustable boost, blah blah. It seems that here in VIC the police have a vendetta against them. I cant think of anything worse than getting pulled up on my way to work at 12:30 am especially when I've done nothing wrong. Buuuuut then again..... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Hey Guys, Just wanted to add my little bit! I know of a couple of cars, not necessarily vl's, that have been engineered with intercoolers, wasn't as hard as some have described! My Boyfriend got some vague EPA notice, we fought it and won! Living in Geelong, they wanted his car on a certain day and time in Melbourne, we wrote and said i don't think so! On the back of the letter was EPA legislation, check it out if you get a notice! Section 55A states that vehicle must not be required to travel more than 50 kilometres from registered address! So keep this in mind! We got a letter back saying the EPA request had been cancelled, and they haven't even hassled us like we thought they would! Most people that got EPA'd got them at SpringNats, it took until February 19th to get the actual notice! It didn't even say where we got seen, so argued that point too! So if you think you are right, Argue the point!
