Do all VL's fuse boxes start to melt, both my VL have done it is there an easy way to fix it? BTW: I already have extra relays on the headlight fuses.

They all seem to eventually have a melt down. What I did was bypassed the old fuse holders with 40amp fuseable links in (high and low beam), Had no problems since.

I made a new discovery last week, upon playing around in the engine bay of my brothers vl. I found that, the main loom (thick one) that comes from behind the motor and then goes into the firewall to the ecu had some nasty damage done to it. The damage was caused by the heat shiled in that area, the one that protects the aircon lines and loom from the exhaust manifold heat. The heat shield had cut into the loom, takin the insulation cleanly off 4 wires, allowing them all to touch eachother.. I thougt i'd let you all know in case u wanna chek ur own, this could be the cause of some poor running of the car and possible melting of some fuseboxes. ??? i dunno maybe ?? To rectify the problem... just put lots of extra tape over that section of the loom, or some of that plastic protecting ****, or remove that heat shield altogether.. as i did. cheers guys L8r, Ollie !

Yep these things apparently melt all the time :? I've seen people replace the whole box with one from a landcruiser I think? But yeah, i've just bypassed a few dodgy fuses (hibeams, etc) and stuck in some big f**koff fuseholders Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

yeah my fuse box went thru a melting stage when quoted $100 from a wrecker for a new loom (he wouldnt sell me the fuse insertion column thingy), i decided to rewire the thing for the low low price of 2 hours time. there were 4 main ones that had melted thru (i cant rememebr exactly which ones as i am at uni but i beleive they were number 4, 7, 5 and something else). i linked the wires from those fuses to a small fuse holder my girlfriends dad gave to me. the hardest thing was realising that the negatives were just linked off one another along the fuse rail and only one wire (the positive) was going to each fuse. after finding this out, linking the positives to the new fuse holder was easy. just make sure you label the wires before you start unscrewing otherwise that 2 hours will increase a hell of a lot. neway, thats my 2 cents.

yep the melting fuse box is a std feature on vl's. I've got a couple of circuit breakers in place of the problem fuses. (high beam & fuel pump i think)

The melting over a period of time if obviously caused by the fuses getting too hot. My fuel pump and low beam fuse virtually had a melt down, but didnt blow. So it wasnt the current being the problem or it would have blown. What I have found the cause to be was the very poor contact of those standard blade fuses. If you have a fuse or any connection that is a dodgy contact you will get large heat build up accross the fuse causing it to melt. I guess being 15 years old our poor vl blade fuse holders are , well just tired n dirty. You could try cleaning the contacts of the fuse rail with one of those thin hobby files to clean the contacts. This helped my fuel punp fuse heaps as now it has good continuity = less heat build up. Have fun all, I know those fuse box's are a nightmare :x

my n/a calais never had a prob with the fuse box (i still have it - perfect condition). My new calais however, is melted horribly, fuses 1 through 5 are now wired externally to the fusebox. The calais shell i picked up was previously a Turbo and had no heat sheild, as a result, the heat from the turbo melted the 1st 1/4 of the fusebox.

i have changed the fuse holder rail, and its not a really big, job. took me about 2 hours playing around. i then also noticed lately the fuel pump fuse was melting so i not have bypased it with a in line fuse. in short time i found that the fuel pump was melting the fuse because i had a bloked fuel fillter. (blocked fuel fillter, causing more power/current drain from the pump) i also guess i small computer fan may also do the trick

Ive seen a few ppl who have actually relocated thir fuse boxes to inside the car. looks alot nearer in the engine bay. of course need to do a bit of playing around. that gas research vl turbo on fullboost (tim) has also done that and it looks great -

Tim off fullbost has probly taken his out cause most of it wouldn't be used anymore (EFI, Fuel pump, etc)

I will say, No, he is still using the Fuse BOX, however, its mounted inside the car, and under/behind the glove box kinda tucked up behind the dash.

kinda impracticle for a daily driven car me thinks.. i mean it may look wiked in the engine bay without a fuse box, but what about changing a blown fuse all the way behind the dash :?: also mounting it behind the dash where there is a fair amount of wool like sound insulation could pose a fire hazard. thats my opinion, even tho i do ageee it looks good. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I've heard of VLs with a Turbo melting the outer plastic case of the Fuse Box because it is too close, but never the actual insides of it... Mines still good, although my Wipers come on just whenever they feel like it, so I'm guessing the Relay is gone... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
