depends on the quality of the job, whether you take it back to bare metal or not, paint it two pack or acrilic (spelling???).
For a decent two pack job, not uncommon to cost upwards of $3K.
What a shame you dont know people in the industry, the money saved by contacts can be spend in other areas.
Most people with 'mint' paint jobs knew the painter and therefore got better jobs

well just the bumbers alone on a vl executive was gonna cost my about $500

Being a Panel Beater by trade I can assure you that look at around $3,000 and up for a quality job with minor dents or rust patched up and refinished in 2-Pack, not many shops use Acrylic paint any more but it is a cheaper alternative and you probably can get a better finish than 2-Pack, ie. Less "ORANGE PEEL" but alot more time is needed to get the desired finish from Acrylic where as 2-Pack is "Gloss off the gun" finish that requires very little "De-nibbing" and maintenance afterwards.
Paint and materials don't come cheap!
In the end you always get what you pay for, Some Panel Shops can do a quality job or a quantity job- Don't pay much but don't expect miracles either.

yer im in the same boat as you walky. What i need to know is from who has done it before is:
whats the layers of doing it? IE im only guessing but here goes
sand back (wanna know how much/far to go and with what?)
undercoat with prepsol or sumfin (how much of this ya need?)
sand that back (with what and how much do you sand it back for)
then ya 2pak coat (how many coats and how many Litres)
then ya gloss 2pak (how much liters)
then ya buff her up etc........
I know im prolly totally wrong but can you guys help here.
My mate said if i "Prep" the car for him so all he has to do is stick the paint in the gun and spray her, hell do it for free........not bad. But I need more details. E-Mail me or what not cos I really need infor on it. Thanks

I would love to know the details involved with a respray. Im sure Im in the position of many other people and I am willing to do plenty of labour myself to save money. I would like to know the processes involved in prep'ing a car for a respray and any other tips would be greatly appreciated.
If it aint asking too much more, would it be a waste of time having a go at painting it myself? If i bought the spray gun and compressor, would it be worth it being a newbie at painting? (ps: im good at painting walls )

Steps to prep car for painting (sort of)
1. Remove all badges, etc
2. Sand back to bare metal (or as far as you want)
3. Wipe down with Prepsol (also known as Cleansol, cleans the surface before painting)
4. Mask anything you dont want painted with newspaper and masking tape
5. Undercoat with primer (do multiple coats and apply evenly)
6. Sand Back primer till smooth
7. Wipe with prepsol again
8. Slap on a few coats of paint, buff, polish and bob's your uncle..

03-07-02, 13:56 GMT+10#10 ok painting a car doesn't sound all that hard really, its just a matter of knowing the process, doing a bit of practice first (on some unimportant things ie.. mums car, or your sisters) haha.. and then cuttin sick on ur own pride and joy
I personally would love to do a spray job myself.. only because i enjoy learning new **** like that.. and i'd be prepared to wait it out to get the best possible end result...
I am curious to know.. how long does it take the panel shop to strip, prep and spray a car, requiring just a standard 2 pac colour change and a few little dings fiked up here and there ?
I would recommed to anyone wishing to have a go themselves to get a book and read heaps, as well as maybe go to a panel shop and jsut ask if u can watch what goes on, what the processes are and the techniques used to spray in particular.
Anyway this must look like a darkstar post lol...
Cheers, Ollie.

hehe ah.........................poetry in motion, as the words sink right in!!!!
How much prepsol do you need? IE How many litres does it take to do ya car for the two coats? then sand back?
Also I have a cardinal red colour, so if i wanna paint it a lil bit brighter would i really need to go all the way back to bare metal? What about kits, do they need to be sanded all the way back?

04-07-02, 05:45 GMT+10#14 i was looking at spraying a car myself but a few people warned against it as 2-pac has some real nasty **** in it that can kill ya. You need respirators with the right type if filters , cover up from head to toe so it doesn't get too much on your skin, proper spray booth to take away the fumes\dust etc., and it is illegal to paint 2-pac without a spray booth.
So can anyone tell me if this is all true ??????

04-07-02, 22:38 GMT+10#16 Just to clear up a few things for you guys, 2pac is harmful, but just painting once won't hurt ya, wear a surgical mask if you want. No need at all too take the car back to bare metal, unless the paint and panels are ****ed. If the paint is in good condition you can just take the shine off it. It doesn't matter how far you take it back, just as long as the surface is smooth so there is adhesion for the paint. When the car is primed, make sure you use a block to rub down, ie. a piece of wood or anything solid, and use wet/dry sandpaper and wet rub it. Best to rub in circular motions and make sure you rub evenly. Can't think of anything else, its all been said already.
