depends on how far you want to go (how much power) and how big your wallet is!

I think Motec and Haltech are considered the best provided you have the $$$.
But it seems Microtech make the best "value vs performance" ecu around. They have almost as many map points and features as the Motec and they are used on alot of very quick cars, including alot of the rigoli weapons. Which i think proves how good they are.
They have recently released alot of newer models which interface with the PC easily, so it can be tuned easier, where as alot of the earlier models you were limited to the hand control which is a bit of a pain in the butt to tune.
The only other factor is who in your local area can tune what ecu's. Some people can tune any ecu, with good results, where some workshops will only like and know one particular brand, so they may be able to achieve better results with a different brand to what you want to use.

Ill put a couple of links, you may have seen but here they are anyway.

That particular vl has the twin cam head and runs 10's all day every day on Microtech.

AUTRONIC- A mate of mine has it got it installed and dyno tuned at P.E.T modifications, cost him around $3,000 all installed, bigger injectors and tuned, no problems with it you would swear it was like a standard ECU but the idle is different, and no he has'nt got a modified camshaft.
The Autronic has alot of features but is hard to install yourself as the instruction manual that comes with the ECU is not that clear, I think it is wise to leave it to a reputable tuner with Autronic experiance.
Stay the hell away from Link's, Hawk's, Microtech and others they might perform well on other cars but VL's don't really respond to well to them, there are only 2 top choice ECU's for VLT's and they are Motec and Autronic they have been proven time and time again.
But it all comes down to money in the end as they don't come cheap.
Probably use the standard ECU to get some ok results.

I run a autronic SMC and have had no problems with it at all. most sytems depend on who installs and tunes it

02-07-02, 22:13 GMT+10#10 Scott,
As far as i know there isnt any workshops in Newcastle that specifically specialise in tuning aftermarket ecu's. There is a place at mayfield called Scotts Dyno Tune, he does alot of ChipTorque stuff, but he might just do chip/cam swaps etc. Would have to talk to them about it.
A mate of mine has a sprinter with over 100rwkw (all mainly thanks to the tuning) and he has to go to sydney to get it tuned. He is running microtech not that it matters but.
So i think around our way Sydney will be the only place with good workshops that really know what they are doing.
If you get the ecu and can wire it up yourself you will save alot of $$
Ive looked at Wolf3d ecu's and they seem a real snack to wire up, i assume other brands shouldnt be much more complicated, the only thing that will cause trouble is obviously the tuning, and getting the aux items to work correctly, such as air con idle up and fiddly **** like that.

03-07-02, 22:40 GMT+10#12 Yeah, talk to Dave, he would probally know more than anyone else around here about where to go.
While we are on the subject of tuning aftermarket ecu's.
Does any know what method would be best to tune a new motor, most people use standard car dyno's, but there are also alot of other people that simply put there new motors onto engine dyno's and tune them and run them in on the engine dyno as well.
Anyone have any ideas on what method would provide the best results?

05-07-02, 12:36 GMT+10#17 what are the wiring diagrams like that come with the autronic as i would have a go at wiring it myself as long as the wiring diagram is pretty clear.

07-07-02, 16:08 GMT+10#18 instruction and diagrams are difficult to make sense of with the autronic. seriously have a look at the new microtech, its relatively cheap and there are plenty of vlt pulling good figures with the old unit, and the new unit is now easier to tune with more features!

08-07-02, 00:01 GMT+10#20 The use of both dyno's will give best results, an engine dyno is better for high hp engines as you have better control of temperature and load also there is less roating weight to spin up. Chassis dyno's are good for low hp mappingand sorting out driveability issue. You can use a Chassis dyno for high hp but no one has a dyno rated high enough in newcastle. As for running in, we give a new engine 30 mins on the engine dyno then check tappets ,head studs and the next run we will pull 1200 hp.
