Hey Guys, Just interested... have any of you guys run your stereo with an SPL meter? and what sort of dB's are you getting... I'm running a mostly Pioneer setup with Stinger cable and a single 10" Sub and i can get around 127dB... which i thought wasn't too bad.

Im currently running a Pioneer deck and bass bullets front and rear.. My bass comes from 2 12" Kicker Solobarics in a dual chambered sealed box, with each chamber at 0.88cf... These are running off a single Kicker ZR600, which puts out 800wrms@4ohm mono.. The last time i tested it, i pulled 136.6db.. That wasnt too bad considering the size and type of box..

you guys should be pulling heap higher spl with those subs I think you boxes need to be redesigned and push more power into them. There is no reason why single twelve can't pull low 140db. Also do you guys measure the spl from your boot or your cabin? Cause if you measure it from your cabin and you don't have the box ported into the cabin your wasting your time. the boot will have a higher spl level. you'll prbably also notice that the bass is louder with the boot open if this is the case. I've seen 150db come out of 2 ten inch subs all beacuse of box design and power levels.

140db from a single 12" sub in a vl is pretty unrealistic!!!. sedans have the acoustic shape of the big pineapple!! and 150db from 2 10's is pretty unbelievable!!.. in any sedan!!. and in a hatch it would still be very difficult!!. esp. if there was anything to do with sound quality involved!, I had a mini with an MTX6000 thunder. and the big daddy fusion amp. from memory, it put out 600rms @ 2ohm on the bench, 1f cap. big battery etc etc etc etc, all in a calculated ported enclosure, and i pulled 146.4db. and people where very impressed!!, it won a few trophies!, but I am paying for it now with ears that ring when its quiet, I regret doing it, but had a lot of fun Not trying to diss you at all.. just saying these people would most likely be into something rather then spl. If you want spl.. get an excel and a gold chain!,

sir calais.. wtf?!?!? you do understand that for every 3 decibels, the sound doubles, so your saying they can get it to quadrouple in sound.. and there is no point measuring SPL from your boot, unless thats where you drive.. how many car stereo comps have you been to where they stick the DB meter in the boot.. none i bet...

Ahahhahahha 140db from my system, i think not Sir Calais. For starters, there is no box, unless you count the whole boot as a box..... Second, its not a big amp, its suprising I can even get 128db from it.... Also don't test your db from inside your boot, test it where it is supposed to be tested, like they do in the comps.

Yep, I had my system in an old little corona before hand, it really was loud in that, never had a chance to measure it though.. as soon as I put the same system in my VL, it was a lot less bassier (more air I guess)...

Stoney read what I wrote about the boot it says how to stop that it never said anything about people actualy putting db meters in the boot. I have seen a vl get 147db from two twelve inch alpine type s subs with a 4th order bandpass box into two ports through the parcel shelf. Most of you are probably running a an enclosed box. Try running ports and making a box out of bandpass. It is possible - and before you go off saming I'm full of **** go do a course in sound physics then install and work on stereos as much as I have then come back argue with me. In fact I'll find the photo of the db meter of the vl sedan. I was only trying to help if you guys don't want help fine but you'll find that. Also stoney do you know that by harding and stiffening the box that sound is pushed into you can be an extra 5 db. Try ripping out your roof lining and replace it wil 10 mill craft wood 2 pak it until you have a hard surface, then line you doors and floor with as much sound deadner as you can afford (trust me its not cheap). Make sure that your all your windows close up properly. You can then two pak the inside of your box until its like glass. Cut two wholes in the metal backing behind you seat the same size as the subs and poke the face of the subs through there making sure the subs seal off properly from the boot and seal the rest of the holes in that metal from the boot. you should then have a presureized cabin. It is realistic to get these power figures it just takes a little extra attention that most car audio shops don't want to know about. If you have a really good amp you should be able to run 1 ohm or less.

I dont think many of us wanna replace our head lining with MDF or similar, or go to the extreme of painting it aswell, If we wanted sound off cars, wouldn't we go buy some ****box old hatch line the whole interior with MDF and cram 4 x 15" subs running at 1Ohm and a couple of fuggin ginormous monoblocks in there, A VL will never do as good as something tiny in a dB drag, its just too big. Where was the 147dB measurement taken from? (dont get cranky)

poor sir calais well back to the question above..... i havent check the db leavels yet, but if i turn it up to much my 3 12inch subs bloody hurts my chest!! so i dont rack it up to much!! only when im showing someone dose it go up like that! i wouldn't mind checking, how do you check??

sir calais.. b4 i start i am not giving you **** okay! anyways, the standard for mesuring dB levels is at one metre, unless you are mesuring a jet engine or omething for obviouse reasons, if you are running a forth order bandpass box with two 12 inch sub in the smallest possible configuration (clamshell isobarik) and you are making the claimed power figures, you are using a big box, then there is no possible way to get the decibel meter 1m away from the point source whilst still in the boot. i agree a porrly designed box is relevent in most cases because ppl dont have the knowledge of accoustice to build a correct box, also if you want some idea of what your car will pull at a competition then place the mic head of the meter just obove the dash i think it is 25-30 cm from the widscreen, if the dB meter is not in this position then the closer you are to the point source then the higher the reading will be.. the best way to get a legit reading it to enter a comp. i can get my dB meter to read 180 dB from my own voice.... the distance is critical

When i had the Sub installed into the VS, i had Cambell Car Audio in Logan run the SPL meter... He said it pulled 134.4dB... but that was with the sub facing through the folded down seat hatch.

i have a GAS tank in the back of my VL... at the moment i have 1 10" 250RMS Infinity subwoofer, and it rattles the car good and proper... I have sound deadened the doors, so they dont rattle, and i am going to sound deaded the parcel shelf when i build pods for it... i have a hole in the metal on the shelf and the MDF where a 10" usd to be, and it is carpeted... Can anyone suggest ways at getting bass through to the cabin more? (i dont want to move the GAS tank )... If i crank it and sit in the back seat, your internals get shaken and ur voice box makes noise all by itself ... i am getting a second 10" put in when i build a box for it. Thanks. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
