Hey people. I have a VL Commodore with a RB30E, blah blah blah, it has standard drum brake rear end. My handbrake doesn't work well enough at the moment to lock up the rear wheels for some sideways action! So can anyone help me out by telling me what I might have to do to get it working properly e.g. tightening handbrake cable and how. Thanks.

i am also interested in how to tighten the handbrake cable. my hand brake only just brings the brakes to touch the discs, doesnt even slow me down 8O not safe and not legal.

hey guys here is the procedure from the gregorys book drum: 1. raise the rear wheels 2. firmly apply the foot brake a few times 3. pull the handbrake to the 3rd notch position 4. adjust the relay rod nuts under the car (look and you will see the, it looks like a Y with a cable going off to each wheel) until a slight drag is felt at the wheels 5. release handbrake and check wheels rotate freely disc: 1. raise the rear wheels 2. pull the handbrake to the 3rd notch position 3. remove the rubber plug from the brake support plate and using a suitable adjusting tool turn the brake adjuster until the brake disc cannot be rotated then back off the adjuster one notch 4. remove any slack from the cable, between the actuating lever and the cable slot, by adjusting the relay rod nuts. 5. release handbrake and check wheels rotate freely hope that helps guys

ok the only reason i know how to do this is cause my bros was the same as u've all described your own.. NOT WORKING.. and everyone needs a little tension on the handbrake to get some sidways action lol ok.. stick your head unter the car about midway.. toward the rear of the gearbox.. u will see the handbrake cable.... now where it splits into that Y shape.. (on the drum brake model) there is a nut u can tighten.. tighten it enough so that u've got rear brakes using the handbrake, but without them draggin.. with the disk brake rear end.. i dunno.. i suppose its a similar process.. just play with things under the car.. best way to learn later guys. DONT U HATE IT WHEN SOMEONE POSTS AT THE SAME TIME U DO ? lol lol Ollie

there is only so much you can do when it comes to tightening the y cable bracket thingy. in the end it will come down to a too bigger gap between the shoes and drum etc , cables stretch etc , drums wear , your best bet would be to save ya pennies and convert to a diak rear , even if its just and openwheeler , anyway that way you can start afresh etc etc and get quality breaking and a decent h/brake.

anyone know what or where this "brake adjuster" is on the disk brake rear end. the way I understand it there is a drum inside the rear disk that is used for the park brake only and this is somehow adjusted to remove slack. mine could do with a tighten, anyone done this before and know what to lool for. tips?

there is no rubber plug in the support plate[backing plate].on drum/disc. if a clever person put the disc on some times you can put a screw driver [tool] through the hole and adjust with the wheel off. to get at the adjuster you have to remove drum or disc.to remove the disc you remove the caliper. before doing this get lots of slack in the cable checking the movement of said.if you only adjust the cable your doing more harm than good. most of the problem is that the shoes are glazed or full of dust.the rears dont work hard enough on most cars[due to proportion valve] and with espestos free pads the drum and linings need regular rough ups. except for heat drums are better than disc.the commodore is a little small[used on gemini]. drum like the HQ-HZ are better but they dont work in reverse.
