Hi i have about $5000 to spend on a VL but im just a little worried about getting a 14 -16 year old car. I would buy a stock Vl cause less chance of it being thrashed. I would try my hardest to buy a Automatic 1988 model. Just a few questions i need answered if possible. 1. What comes with a standard VL? eg. power stearing, air con? 2. What are they like for fuel? How bigs the tank? How far do you go? 3. Without any mods what are they like to drive? 4. Any standard faults which have to be rectified? Any more info about them would be greatly appreciated thanks email me at [email removed] or leave a message here. thanks

heh, they're a great car... 1. What comes with a standard VL? eg. power stearing, air con? Just about all came with pwr steering, except for SL where it was an option and some government ones.. 2. What are they like for fuel? How bigs the tank? How far do you go? Well, my Exec with a few mods gets probably 400-500ks/tank and the tanks about 60L. On average about 12-13/k/L 3. Without any mods what are they like to drive? Quite smooth, nice engine... not too bad at all They still look pretty good even today 4. Any standard faults which have to be rectified? Just watch for cracked heads, CAS (crank angle sensor) faults are the main ones, + all the usual wear and tear [/b] Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Just like to add that the Water Pump is a VERY common thing to go in a VL, so keep an eye out on that too, cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

hey lil matty, I think depends alot on how you drive the car too. An auto will guzzle more fuel then a manual. And Ive had both a auto and a manual and im not ever getting a auto cos they are to boring to drive, dont sound as good and are harsher on fuel. Like most things extractors, boreing, port n polish and bigger zorst if you drive normal it will give you more bang for you buck but remember if you foot it everywhere the petrol will dropp quicker cos it has more mods (bigger equipment lets say) so it can dump more petrol in....just a though. Anyone else like to elaborate?? Luke

Body wise - the boot seal often leaks as it rusts also the panel at the bottom of the windscreens usually rusts

theyre a pretty awesome car for their age really. The most common probs are: Boot seal doesnt seal really well, Tail lights sometimes go dim or go out, caused by the earth being rusty, The swaybar that holds the diff in place wears the bushes and it moves side to side on the worn bushes, causes car to dart off left and right without warning. Very easy to fix, replace with nolathane bushes, Auto tranny bands may need tightening, makes them shift heaps smoother. also very easy to fix if you have the knowhow. They usually rust around the bottom of the windscreen hole. Headlight seals are pissweak and allow water to enter them and fog up, Heads usually crack so look for one that has had the head done to save yourself heaps of dosh, The N/A manual box dies if it is not driven hard enough. My aunty has had her 88 N/A manual Berlina since new and is on its third box because she just drives like a grandma and uses 5th at 100k's.It just chatters the fuc out of the gears. Thats about all i can criticize about VL's because thay are just such a good strong car. Jas

Do not try to tow anyhting with them! Not being a smart ass but a friend of mine tried to reverse his boat in to the water. Opened his door to see where he was and the car stretched! He can no longer close his door and the car subsequently had to be written off. R31man

If you want performance around town get a V6 commodore, cheaper to insure than a Turbo VL with performance to match.

most of the normal vl mods will make the car more fuel efficient such as extractors and exhaust-larger diameter, less restriction and afm mods such as taking out mesh screens blah blah. $20 of fuel gives me nearly 250km
