Hey, i have had a problem with this ever since i had the car. It just sits on 0 all the time. i am wondering whether its a wiring problem or the sender problem.
where is the sensor for this anyway.
and seeing i have a commodore converted calais, i was wondering how to get the low fuel & low coolant lite working. It is a series 2 dash, i can see the lites, but they never work
thanks for ya help guys
With regards to the oil guage.
Are you sure there is a oil sender in the block, not just an oil switch.
Just that if they changed the dash they may not have put in the pressure sender.
Also generally if the wire is not hooked up or broken the gauge will show full deflection, not sit on zero.
If it does have the correct pressure sender, we will just assume it is ****ed and needs replacement, if not, its obviously the gauge itself in the dash.
Ohh, also the sender is right alongside the oil filter, if it is a sender it will be round and big, the pressure switch is little and not really what you would call round.

i have been led to beleive that all manual vl commodores were equiped with the tacho dash which came from either a berlina or calais factory into any model. As i know some one that has a sl and still has all the oil pessure gauge and voltameter.
it is factory 5 spd.
i will have a closer inspection today.
This is something to do with your sensor in the side of your block. the gauge isI never actually got to it. I'm planning on changing the motor any waThe sensor is just below your plenum. Try pushing it in get some one to rev it and see what the gauge does then.
oil gauge.
in the dealership I fitted heeps of these.the dashes were cheep.
the oil gauge wire has a flat terminal taped in the loom above the oil filter[oil light is round].bluebird/skyline/pintara with VDO gauge had both terminals in 1987 it was cheeper than a holden type.but!! the wire for the gauge is not allways in the harness from the dash to the main loom.only if fitted with lots of options.
someone mentioned before why didnt they fit fit LSD to the turbos as it was $75 option.police BTI was a dealer $75ption with all the goodies brakes/dash good batery terminals.but you had to wait for them for months and when they arrived on the yards we often pulled LSD out as the owners did not want it due to noise and handling woes.
the limited edition cars[like the hunter gold] had all that stuff.but no powersteering or a/c LSD.
sydney got that white V8 auto with the silly opera house on the boot..
Hey guys, now strangly my voltometer doesnt work, was working fine, then the other day, i noticed, nothing, left it for the nite, started her up, and still, nothing.
what the f**k cld be going on ?
i dont want to spend $$$ to get it fixed atm ... i just wanna know how this cld be goin about ...
MY VL's Oil gauge does not work and I was told by the local mechanic that my engine sender was fine, it was just something in the dash - either wiring or broken gauge. I seem to think it is a broken gauge and i will prolly buy a new one $47 approx and attempt to fit it myself.
How easy is a gauge to fit? Is it worth getting a qualified person to do it?
Thanks
fitting it is fiddly but easy. remove the dash above the instrument panel (remove little panels beside the instrument panel to access screws), unplug the wires and speedo at the back, undo the 4 screws holding the cluster in, and then pull it to bits and put the new gauge in.
it is easier than it sounds!
To all those people with SL's and the clock dash rather than the tacho dash.......SL turbos were almost always BT1 pack (ex police) and came with the tacho dash. Non turbo SL's came with the clock dash
Mine just flicks around every now and then(zero to full scale and back really fast), must have a short or a bad connection somewhere I guess.
Mind you first time it did it, I was certainly 8O !

a bad connection at the block. It's a common problem and very easy to fix.
yeah my oil guage is a bit weird.. when the car is cold it sits right on high all the time..
Once the car is warm it sit a bit below halfway on idle and under any sort of power it will be back up on high

That's what is meant to happen, perfectly normal
