OK guys, i've posted this problem in a number of forums, can't seem to find a solution.
Basically, on idle the injectors seem to be pulsing very loudly and erratically... i know they are meant to make noise, but this is exessive - it never used to be this loud
If i put the car into drive or reverse, they quieten down to what would be considered normal... but in park or neutral all hell breaks loose.
The car still starts and runs fine, and fuel economy is normal.
Any ideas would be appreciated!
Platinum,
I'd say your noise would be lifters especially considering that the noise stops after a few seconds.
As for the noise prob with the original post, injectors I'd say. Remember that when you are putting the car into a gear the revs are dropping and so the noise should drop similarly.
Have you by any chance replaced the fuel pump or removed the dampener from the back of the car in the fuel line. What happens is if you remove it or it dies is that you start getting pulses into the fuel rail from the pump, i would try clamping the line a bit to see what happens. you might find that it stops, the vn commodore has a slicon hose for the body to engine line, if you replace it with rubber you get the same problem.
hey, i had an annoying ticking sorta noise whenever i started my car that lasted for a few minutes then went away, i thought it was lifters but turned out to be a leak in the exhaust manifold, no noise since it was fixed. mine is an n/a vl also
No, the fuel pump has not been replaced recently... but i have a feeling it has something to do with fuel pressure...
A guy told me that my problem was most likely due to a faulty fuel pressure regulator... the needle is stuck or something, so the computer compensates with longer injector pulses... haven't got it checked out yet...
Noisy lifters... i would classify it as a metalic piston slap kind of sound, as apposed to the baby rattle tick tick sound of the injectors...
my lifters are noisy on a cold start up, especially if the car hasn't been started for a couple of days... goes away after 10 secs or so. I'd start to worry about it if they make noise after a run on the freeway when its warmed up etc...
Anyways, thanks for the suggestions guys
to check if its injectors or not, when its loud just hold a piece of hose to your ear and the other end on the injector.
are you sure its not lifters, it does sound like it.
I had and still do a problem with my lifters, it sounded like 2 were gone so I had a mechanic replace the 2 he thought was gone. After that it took a few seconds from startup for them to stop but about 2 weeks later they are continuous until the car has really been warmed up even then they still come in and out while driving every 10-15mins or so....any opinions?
Also i have 1 (#3) fuel injector that has a constant tick tick tick tick tick coming from it, im guessing its on its way out maybe but efficiency and fuel usage seems fine...(approx. 10L/100k)
I think if the injector was on its way out it would be making very little ticking...
if they are ticking, means they are pulsing fine...
if u can't hear a tick, it could be dirty etc
that's what a mechanic told me the other day
correct him if he's wrong!
vlt have lifters? i dont think so. vls r over head cams. your thinking of rockers. lifters r wat they have in holden 202 for ex, cam pushes the lifters, lifters push the push rod, push rod pushes the rocker, roker pushes down on the valve. am i wrong, please correct me
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

There are lifters on OHC engines, they are what sits on the cam and pushes the rockers up. They sit directly onto the cam and onto the bottom end of the rocker.
