ive had my lsd for about a year now. how ever i know that they can singel spin some times, how ever after doing a dounut and the diff singel spinning, it is now very lose and rarely lsd's.
i know i can get it tightend again, but i know it will just happen again.
i got the work done by sunshine diff's.
just asking you guys if u have the same problem.
also i am thinking of f@*king off the lsd and getting a mini spool. do any of u guys have one or know of people who have them, and how safe or annoying are they.
to repair the lsd, will be the same price as the mini spool.
what u guys think

if it's a street car dont bother with a mini spool, to hard on tyres & will stuff all your rear bushes. get new clutch packs put inh your LSD 8)

well if you do burnouts all the time yes your LSD will wear out . They are like mini clutches in your diff and they wear away.
If u have to smoke up your rears all the tiome then maybe a spool is for you. Just be careful they are illegal in QLD and corners can be hazardous

The Commodore LSD doesnt use clutches in a sense but rather uses cones inside a identical hole, they are known for slipping if you thrash the hell out of them, mine ran out of puff in less than a year due to an oil problem.

Scuse my ignorance, I know how LSD works ... can someone tell me how a minispool works in comparison to LSD. I.E What the hell is a minispool

A mini spool is a death sentance on the road, basically it locks both axles together, so when you go around a corner one of your wheels will chatter and skid, in the wet you will be in trouble..
They are highly dangerous and are basically designed for straight line drag racing.

got a mini spool in my r31 with 270kw at the rear and it was the best investment i made. very easy to drive with even in the wet if you are not stupid.

22-06-02, 17:49 GMT+10#10 mini spool u can buy for $95 and just put it in urslf, easy. u don't need a lsd to make a mini spool in fact u need to take out all the lsd parts to fit the minispool. or if u wanna make it even cheaper, get a arc welded and put bolts and **** in the spider gears and weld it all together, but do this slowly and let the spidergears cool becoz u can worp the whole diff centre.
mini spool is ok but if u run wide tyres u increase the chance of break axels . i know a few people that break a lot of axels, also a mini spool is better in small car like gemni's rather then large cars commodores.
if u use the car everyday just get a lsd and put more tension springs in it (locking it quicker) so it acts just like a minispool but don't put near as much stress on the axels.
i currently have a single spinner but i'm going to change it to LSD and just have it tight as a nun's nasty if u guys want a good diff dude in melbourne that works from home tell me and i'll give u this number

just looks like i will have to put up with the lsd.
but i will look into stronger springs, thinking that is the problem.
just for u other guys i had my sinngel spinner, converted for $550. i think it was cheap at the time. and mini spool got quoted at $300, in melbourne

18-09-02, 18:57 GMT+10#13 hmmmmm ive got an LSD turbo diff, but due to excessive wear, by the previous owner me things, its single spinning in the dry :/
I do get a bit of sideways action at first, then the drens looks like its single spinning more than LSDing going by the blackness .
In the wet, its a real gem, as its sideways and opposite lock all the way !
While im not such a burnout fenatic, as i cant afford the tyres, i would still like to have LSD for hard launching at the strip.
How much would it cost to reco the lsd just to make it spin both wheels?
Ive jacked the rear up, and both wheels turn at the same time.
when i put my hand brake on, i can just spin the wheel on one side (left when in drivers seat) the right (drivers) seems to spin easier than the left.
no hand brake, both spin together.
Is this a sign of excessive wear?
Thanks.

24-09-02, 08:47 GMT+10#17 HYDRATRAK - where , how much and how easy to fit into the VL housing.
Very interested as i have thought about this many times but was of the opinion that they were only avaliable in IRS equipped cars

24-09-02, 11:34 GMT+10#18 I got it done in Cairns, the centre dosn't fit into a VL housing, you have to get VL tubes welded on to a Hydratrak housing. I don't know if you can use a IRS housing? How much, good question. I asked this guy in Cairns I wanted to get rid of a nine inch diff, and I would swap it for a standard VL LSD, He had the Hydratrak just out of the AU XR8 and sead that the centre should fit a standard housing, it didn't, so he did the cut and weld jobie, called me that it was ready, I picked it up. He didn't ask for any extra $$$ for the rooting around, and I didn't offer. So it cost me a noisy nine inch. I think I was very LUCKY!!

25-09-02, 06:41 GMT+10#20 The springs that make the std LSD hold are around 50lbs, a diff guy over here fits 300lb springs (along with other mods), they are very tight and should last years of abuse, he sells them to guys that circuit race commodores in endurance racing. He charges $400 NZ (thats includes the head)
Any good diff shop that has set up circuit cars over there should have the knowledge to mod the LSD head so it can stand abuse.
